FAST850R
I have 1996 850, and one of the mud flaps is just hanging. I need to re install it, but the screws? are very tight. Do I just use a vice grip and pull them? They don't look like reusable, but I don't know. I don't want to break them so I am asking here. Please let me know. Thank you. fasteddyT5
Those aren't screws they are rivets. You can pull them out with a set of vice grips, but just be careful not to damage the holes that they run through. Or you can drill them out. And yes, they are not reusable. You can get new black ones from the dealer or ipd (possibly fcp), but you can also use standard pop-rivets which run pretty cheap, or just use some nuts and bolts if you don't have a rivet tool. Thank you very much for the advice. I will try to use some bolts since I don't have a rivet tool.
BEJinFBK
I wouldn't recommend using vise grips. You'll tear up the holes and make a mess. Drilling or cutting the heads off very carefully with a dremel cutoff wheel works well. And if you haven't got a rivet gun, you can get'em cheap. There are several places on your Volvo you may need one later. And they're just a good tool to have. The OEM rivets usually pretty cheap, if your local dealer isn't a crook, and should be in stock at any decent Vovlo dealer parts counter.
bergmjs
Just get a small pair of wire cutters. Slip the blade tips under the rivet head and cut the head off, won't damage the hole and cuts them out fine.
FAST850R
Thank you for the tips. I couldn't take out the rivet because a vice grip was going to tear the wholes. I guess I need to buy the rivet gun.

James A Sousa
I recommend that you get the Volvo rivets - I have changed two front bumpers and I found that cheap rivets do not hold as well as the Volvo ones. I think that the volvo ones are just a bit larger When you do the job, I suggest that you put nails in all the holes to line them up. then replace them with rivets, starting from the middle. This keeps all the holes lined up well enough so that any small errors do not add up and make it hard to put the last one or two in place.
bergmjs
When you put each rivet in, theres still a bit of wiggle until all of them are in, so lining up all the holes at once isn't too critical. Once you get 2 rivets in they should all be lined up, just make sure the plastic tab of the mudflap is in the metal clip on the bottom of the side-skirt. I bought some of the body rivets from FCP and the rubber surrounds on them just cracked off when you install them, so I just use standard aluminum rivets that are the size of the hole. A box of rivets for $3 is much better than the Volvo rivets that are like $1 each.
db130
part number for the volvo rivets is 979878(sometimes you need the the full part number which is 979878-6). MSRP $.83 each I use a Marson HP-2 rivet gun which could be had for $21 shipped on ebay,

Yellow95
I replace all the rivets with plastic trim plugs on all my cars. You can get them at any auto parts store. Gary
