Tyler T5R Posted November 3, 2011 Report Share Posted November 3, 2011 Driving the 98 V70R to work on Tuesday, I had gone about 1/4 mile and the oil light came on. In my rearview mirror, I could see I was leaving a trail so I turned around and went home and turned off the car. In total I drove about 3/4 of a mile at 25 MPH with the light on. When I got home and got out I found oil all over the front passenger corner of the hood and quarter panel, on the windshield, headlight, etc. I opened the hood and quickly discovered the upper oil cooler line had separated near the radiator, where the rubber hose crimps around the metal line. Great. Of course, there is now a lot of oil in this corner of the engine bay, and on my driveway. I now have both new Volvo oil cooler lines from the dealer, as well as the o-rings. Before I put them on I'd like to clean up a lot of the oil. Any tips on the best way, and where I really don't want to spray any cleaners/liquids/water in this corner of the engine bay, are encouraged. I hate to even think of this, but what's the likelihood of engine damage? if I replace the bad line, refill the oil, and it starts and runs, how do I tell if there's permanent damage? It has 197k so I was about to replace all the timing pieces and water pump - I already have all tho$e part$. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TIZIO AKA 1 HND MEC Posted November 3, 2011 Report Share Posted November 3, 2011 Get the magnetic oil pan drain plug,change the oil after 100-200 miles ( I know cost, but better than change engine) and look for metallic parts on the magnet. If is like "dust" small particles you good, BUT drive the car easy for a while and check again!!! If you find big/bigger parts, chunks you better start the search for a engine or parts. Black Betty Posted November 3, 2011 Report Share Posted November 3, 2011 thats a tough spot to clean up. I usually use simple green but I usually also avoid that area. If it were me, I'd disconnect the B+ cable at the alt, disconnect the battery and then be carefull with some simple green and water. Then take a leaf blower and blow (not suck) the engine bay dry. After that I'd check any connectors for moisture inside and take a shop vac if there was any water. If you can park in the sun with the hood open for a few hours to let dry I'd do it. Got some Simple Green, some orange citrus degreaser, some Walmart engine degreaser, some cheap oil for the first test, and some good oil for hoping it runs fine.
