Disassembly we all know how to do that right? All the little clips around the headlamp pops off the glass comes off, with the gasket. we will skip the boring stuff.

Cut off mod, done the easy way.

  • take the round screw off cap off.
  • there will be 3 silver screws to take off in the first picture
  • the following three shows the screws to pull off
  • then the bulb housing comes off the projector
  • take the bulb housing and trace the area around the bottom to make a 1/2 moon
  • get some sheet metal shears
  • cut the trace out like in the pictures
  • drop it in and use some of the 3m thin quality double stick tape and stick it down
  • proceed to put the bulb housing back on and crew into place
  • the metal shield you just made will get sandwiched onto the old shield

LED STRIP mod

using the led strip in the first picture

  • you flip the lense cover over and razor blade off the silicone off the four tabs that hold the clear reflector cover
  • after the cover is loose you will take the lense off
  • with the lense off the led strip has 3m stick tape that can be stuck to the insode of the reflector housing, pics are self explainitory :P
  • you see on and off pictures

LED STRIP PROJECTOR RING MOD

unfortunatly i didnt take much of this.

what i used was a side emitting LED strip that is 20" in length and went around the projector bulb and stuck it on .

IMG_20111129_133923.jpg

HIDz

I used a step tool, or a UNI-Bit to drill my holes

IMG_20111129_173138.jpg

IMG_20111129_173150.jpg

You then run the hid wires out. and used the supplied grommet to seal the hole like so

IMG_20111129_173112.jpg

I had to remove one side of the clip so i could put the bulb holder down correctly like in the pictures.

Projector install onto car

Take the corners off first

IMG_20111129_165454.jpg.

IMG_20111129_165518.jpg

  • Each side has 3 10mm bolts

IMG_20111129_165559.jpg

IMG_20111129_165607.jpg

IMG_20111129_165636.jpg

Found it easiest to take the side one off with a finger thru this hole in the side near the fender

IMG_20111129_165736.jpg

You can figure out how to reinstall the headlamps right? The corners are pretty tricky. make sure both tabs slide into the headlamp slots. the next picture will show the seam is virtually seamless. this is when the headlamp and corners are seated right.

IMG_20111129_172147.jpg

tthese corners have T harnesses so the bulb inside the headlamp gets wired up.

NOTE:BULBS ARE NOT INCLUDED WITH THESE HEADLAMPS, SO NO LOW BEAM BULBS, NO HIGH BEAM BULBS, NO TURN SIGNAL BULBS, NOT EVEN THE NEW BULB IN THE HEADLAMP HAS A BULB(it takes a 168 push in bulb)

I honestly dont remember if you can get to this parking light bulb with out first removing the glass from housing and disassemble it to get to it. i think you may be able to get to it thru the high beam bulb hole

IMG_20111129_165305.jpg

another NOTE:

If you had HIDS and figured you can save a step by reusing the twist off covers for the low beam bulb. so you can save 10 minutes and not have to make another hole in the new cover? Dont do it, they will fit, it will seem tight, THEY WILL NOT SEAL TIGHT. I know this because it rained on the way home and i cheated, look at my pictures i used the old covers. I had moisture come in, so will you. use the new ones, dont make the same mistake i did. I did it because it was 5:45pm and i wanted to close up shop and go home by 6pm :P

Here's first pictures

Impressions/review

A little about me, i sell alot of aftermarket lights. Alot of cheap crap and alot of good stuff. TYC,Bosch, Hella, No name cheap cheap china crap. I was a skeptic for many many years about these for my x70's i had over the years. I bought over the years new OEM's, New aftermarket OEM, New 03-04 C70 Jewels, used jewels, used oem and finally my first set of ABM projectors.

I was going to spend $700 of new OEM jewels. Instead, since i never tried this and @ $400 a set (almost 1/2 of the jewels) why not.

I must say i am pleasantly surprised that the light output is great, cutoff is perfect(with the mod of course. cant tell you how it is before). Much better than stock, still cant say i like these better than my jewels. I might change that statement one the HID fogs are in. Since i am comparing a really low C70 with jewels, hids lows and hid fogs to just a stock ride height v70 with only hid low beams. Still love my lights in the xc90(hid low beams, HID high beams, hid fogs, hid reverse, LED reverse LOL)

If you are thinking about doing these headlights, even without the mods.....

If you are thinking about a cheaper alternative than OEM Jewels from a 03/04 C70......

If you are thinking you can cheap out and get HID in the OEM frosty headlamps....

If you think you can see at night, You need to check your headlights and see if the lense has deteriorated and it has little to no more reflective coating inside.

You Need to buck up and buy these lights.

You dont have the money? Save up, charge it, borrow it, do what ever legit means to get it.

You will not regret it, i know i sure didnt and i am a hard man to please.

Have fun!

UPDATE:

The original way these lights come... You will get alternating flashing of the corner lamp and the marker lamp inside the headlight

This following MOD allows for the markers to STAY on with the parking lights and not ALTERNATING FLASH

Cut the black wire coming from the headlamp

IMG_20111130_153652.jpg

Take the black wire you just cut and connect it to the Green / yellow

IMG_20111130_153739.jpg

Also here is the step tool / uni-bit in action drilling a hole into the low beam caps. like i said earlier, dont reuse your old caps from the other headlamps, they will not seal correctly.

Just drill it to the size of your HID grommet

Damn Steve..how do you find time to work?

thats funny, yesterday's time line from 9am-6pm store hours. i did the two cars i had lined up for me to get done thruout the day early in the AM since i knew i had a write up to do, and wanted to take time to mod the lights too.

  • 1245pm get lunch
  • 1255pm started unboxing lights. estimated install on the lights to be 20 minutes tops
  • 105pm customer comes in and we bullshit about his new 2012 300c srt8.
  • 220pm just finished bullshitting with the customer while i was modding the lights. casually got $500 navigation mod job to do next week LOL
  • 330pm my installer walks up to the showroom and see's me doing the lights.
  • 345pm after some brainstorming he comes back with a prototype of our idea of a cut off mod plate.
  • 410pm two customer phone calls, 3 dealer inquirys, i get to play with the prototype
  • 420pm we have a working prototype
  • 455pm have the lights back together
  • 510pm the lights are back in. took the short cut of re using the twisty caps to save time instead of drilling to the new covers for the HID bulb pass thru (BAD MISTAKE, see below)
  • 535pm fussing with the corners so they align up right and both tabs get seated correctly.
  • 545pm rolling out into the darkness and the rain to adjust the lights, did pre adjustments inside but my shop is not 100% level
  • 550pm using my Milwakee drill going CLOCKWISE is adjusting UP and COUNTER-CLOCKWISE is DOWN
  • 6pm close

Find out that the covers from the oem headlamps fit realy right but DO NOT MAKE A GOOD seal on the headlamp. I ended up with moisture inside the headlamp. You see why i chose to do that to save time.

Also found out that these headlamps will make the marker light inside the headlamp blink alternating with the corners. As you see in the above videos. I dont like that. I will change that today. I will also post how to fix that.

Wow, +1,000,000 just for the amazing writeup and detailed pics!

How long did it take you and what's the grand total cost?

So going by my time line 3 1/2 hours, with constant interupptions and taking pictures for you guys, and doing 4 mods at the same time

  • headlight ring
  • led marker/turn light
  • hids
  • cut off mod

If i had a straight run on it, i think it would still would have take this long, if not longer. Since i took breaks, this allowed me to brainstorm on how to make the cut-off mod. after we had the idea, making the metal piece took all of three minutes from stuff we find around the shop. can you do it faster, you can now after i showed you. :)

updated first post with rewiring info to make the marker light inside the headlamp NOT ALTERNATING FLASHing with the turn signals. I dont like this, plus with the LED mod, it looks stupid. heres more pics, one is also of the step tool / uni-bit in action.

IMG_20111130_152030.jpg

Cut the black wire

IMG_20111130_153652.jpg

attach it to the green with yellow

IMG_20111130_153739.jpg

you now have marker lights inside your headlamps that do not alternate flash...this was sooooooooo annoying to me.

Next up, Add in OEM Fogs J relay..ect...
