Msd Ignition Module Placement - Opinions

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a place for my MSD ignition. It fits inside the airbox. I need opinions please. Seems to clear the filter with about 1/2 inch space. The remaining area would not be affected. Looking for thoughts.

1. Is this a dumb place for it?

2. Restrict airflow?

I would think that would restrict flow.

I forget who I originally stole my placement idea from, but it fits wonderfully under the cowl panel. I drilled a hole between the upper torque mount and the brake booster for the wires to pass through and unless the box is pointed out you'll never even notice.

Under the cowl seems like a reasonable placement - long as you carefully route the wiring through the existing channels to keep in tidy & prevent potential faults.

Ditch the airbox & mount it on the inner fender allows for the shortest possible wiring harness & connections. Less potential for problems.

The 6A box is an enhancement in the upper RPM ranges when the ignition is firing almost constantly. It provides a constant voltage and multi-fires in the high RPM range when a stock ignition system may not have the needed voltage in high RPMs. MSD = Multi Spark Discharge

And the 6A box only enhances the coil that IPD sells or the OEM Volvo Bosch coil. Two different ignition components.

You can get the MSD coil and 6A box from anywhere, Jegs, Summit Racing, etc.

http://www.jegs.com/...roductId=745881 Coil on sale too!!!

on that note would you get the ipd msd coil then the 6a from est i guess?

I put mine FLAT on the bottom (inside) of my IPD cone filter shield. No air restriction, safe from water/rain, close to other related components, constant air flow helps keep things cool. It is not the prettiest arrangement available (though it is somewhat hidden under the filter) but it is very practical.

Interesting, do you have any pictures of the installation? So, it is inside the IPD housing below the filter?

Thanks,

That only matters if your tying it into like a tach gauge or a rev limiter or something else that is RPM dependent. Non issue for us.

just a question a about the 6A box. Every where i look it says for 4 6 and 8 cilinder

Is that not a problem for our engines?

I have mine strategically placed on the frame for the airbox (what the airbox mounted too before).

I may pull mine out, as I think it may be the cause for some recent issues I have been having... just been too lazy to do it.
