vivalavolvo
Hello, Little bit of background. For the past few weeks i thought one of my CV axles were going bad, it sounded like it was binding up while backing up and turning. I also noticed it was kinda sloppy feeling when engaging gear. This is in my 95 855T5 with an Look at me, I think I am witty box. Did a power flush last year, all motor mounts are only a month old. Yesterday, i was backing up while turning up a hill in a parking lot when it made the worst thud crack bang you could hear in a car. Both me and my passenger cringed wicked hardcore. As i was cruising through holiday traffic between 25-35MPH i noticed the car started surging, not engine surging, but kind of like some one pumping the clutch on a manual. At this point i turned around to head home when the flashing arrow of death came one so i pulled over and checked the fluids and reset the codes with my OBDII software on my phone. This is when it got hairy. First gear was slipping and banging into place. So i put it in winter mode and crawled back to my buddies shop (luckily 2 doors down from home) and as i pulled into the lot it stopped moving unless i got it up to about 4k. I'm around 170+k (odo was busted when i bought it). So is it safe to assume this trans is now complete toast and i should start looking for a replacement? What model cars can i get one from? I know some of the newer ones don't have the speed sensor in the same place, but that can be worked around. So if you were in my position, what would be the best trans to grab if can be found with low miles? an M56H swap came to mind, but time and money is an issue. TLDR; Trans made a pop, limped home. What's a good replacement trans? Don't mind a little modification (accumulator mod, ABS tap for speedo signal). I do plan putting a tune into it later on since the engine still runs strong, i've done a lot of work to it so i plan to keep the car.
vivalavolvo
Automatic, not a witty box O_o. It wasn't witty enough to get it self outta this one.
winterhalo
Cheapest and quickest fix would be another AT.
Rsterns
If you're keeping it, what I'd do is go to a reputable tranny shop and have them install a proper rebuild.
fastwagonhawaii
Or to save even more money have them completely rebuild it not just fix it, and you install it. You will save some money but more labor for you.
Keaton85
Just get another good used one if it's bad. Much cheaper and these are a dime a dozen! Rebuilding on these older cars isn't worth it.

They are so much fun and I wish I had one...
Jardim
My autobox went and in one week i worked 80 hours just to get the money for a manual swap. It's worth the headaches/money period
