You really are a idiot.

I am done with you, I just hope no one reads your DIY and actually tries to do it.

whatever. I think if they made it 1" past my post and saw your bright red letters about how you know better they will be fine. You just keep insulting me while the only valid point you have is that I did not write a perfect alarm install how to in the short time that I had to dedicate to it at the time. My alarm works, and so will anyone else with minimal electrical skills following my write up. I would have flipped a brick if someone had posted this for me in the last 2 years so I thought I would help out someone else who might be in the same post. I will make it easy enough for your mom/gf/sister to do it another time. For now I am leaving to go do something better with my time then arguing with you.

As suggested I will update good locations to tap the power and ground connections, but any red or black wire in the engine wiring harness (where all the other wires are located) is going to work. I looked at the diagrams and no other wires of those colors are used in that area. PLUS I told the reader to check the connection with a multimeter first anyways.

This statemant, I have to agree with GS on and take exception to. To begin

with, wire color has no real bearing on whether or not it's a good place to tap.

Just grabbing any power and ground willy nilly can get you into BIG trouble.

Overloading a circuit, picking up power on the wrong side of the fuse, etc.

may not bite you immediately, but I know a few firemen that have some stories.

Sure, it may work, but your new stuff won't do much for you in a burned out car.

If you aren't comfortable with power distribution in an automotive electrical environment,

get some help from someone that does. Just like the home PC guy that frags his OS

because he has admin rights and he shouldn't - Stuff Happens. ( Ask me how I know... )

I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm just reminding you that if you have questions, spending

a little more time in the diagrams, keeping in mind that you're tapping into an engineered system

and not being shy about getting online and asking questions can save you a Pile 'O' Crap.

Power distribution is a vehicle shouldn't be taken lightly. Someone else usually gets stuck cleaning

up the mess and it ain't no fun. You WILL be charged extra for "Return Wiring to Stock".

THEN you'll get hit with billable hours for the reinstall, and that always costs more than a standard install.

Again, to me, you guys both have some good points,

but good lord...

Maybe you two should get together with some

pizza, brews, burn a few and watch a movie!

FAIL... I can tell ur a pro :arob:. first of all Pros dont have to go around talking about how good they are, at this or that they are content. they know they are the best and people know they are the best just by ther name and ther work. you sound like some generic crabby radio installer that works at some hole in the wall in the back of a tire place that thinks he does the best work ever. and see i dont have to say im the best. im not a radio installer i make carbon fiber for lamborghinis, volvo, ferrari, aston you name it i've done it. from concept to creation. any monkey can follow a how to guide to put somthing in but it takes real talent to be able to make somthing in ur mind and then produce it. let my work speak for itself and dont try to cram it down someones throat. you just showed us a bunch of random pictures that dosent really show us any quality of work. you could have takin the kick panel off the jeep and takin a pic wow real hard. paul is a good guy and i have seen his car and the work is imo very good all installs are professional and clean. just had to get that out sorry paul

this made me laugh out loud. literally.

not even close.

Agreed. And good job on the write up. Ghost Shadow, I have no idea what your problem is. You don't like it, write your own. PS, this is a volvo forum. No one is coming here looking for info on how to ground cables on random non-volvo cars.

re: carpc, even though it's not related to the OP's main point of the post.

It's super useful. I can set up my dropbox to sync directly with my car, music is always fresh because the radio is garbage these days. oh, and also not to mention i can always do v70r and dump anything i want into the shared drives, including movies and audio. it helps on 8 hour drives from SF -> LA.

Paul, thanks for the contribution.

GS, thanks for the extra tips in adding to Paul's write-up.

Personally, I like my Viper with pager. I did, however, disconnect my remote start the day after Jason and Paul witnessed my car reverse up a curb, almost into a retail shop. I'm glad my door was open and I was able to jump in and get it out of gear!! I haven't connected the remote start since. My dad parks the car in the garage, and I definitely don't want the car inside the house anytime soon!

Paul, keep it up.

I can't comment on your specific Viper starter, but both Viper and Compustar do make starters, or alarm/ starter combos that are compatable with manual transmisions to prevent this very thing from happening, it works only if installed correctly.

During the installation process their is a jumper that if it remains intact the brain will act as if it were in manual trans mode, meaning that the installer has to go out of their way to change the way the brain acts, from manual transmission mode to auto transmission mode, by cutting the jumper.

In these manual transmission complatable starters, if the jumper remains intact and the installer does a succesfull job installing, you can only start the car only if the car is percieved to have been shut-off in safety mode.

Safety mode:

- Would have you place the car in neutral

- Put on your park brake (park brake sensor needs to be installed properly)

- Remove your key from the ignition

- You exit the car, and till you close the doord the car will remain running. (dome light sensor needs to be installed properly)

- Once all doors are closed the car will shut off and lock the doors (unless you have a feature such as turbo-timer then your car will and close the door.

Following the above steps ensures that you exited and locked your car while it was in neutral. if at any point your car's doors are opened, safety mode is reset. So you can restart your car knowing you exited the car and locked the doors while it was in neutral, if at any point you or anyone else went back in the car and accidentaly/ or intentionally placed the car in gear, then the car will not start...

Its a bit of a pain, but if you live in a climate where you would benefit from a car starter, and you have a manual, you get used to it pretty quickly.

This didn't work for the wife, so we upgraded her car to an automatic, as she would always exit the car properly and then forget her phone, purse, or something else in the car and go back in, and then wonder why the car wouldn't start...
