goobernoodles
I have a 96 850r w/ an auto - 169k. Earlier today, I got on it on an uphill onramp with my hand on the shifter, and half way or so through 2nd gear, the transmission fell out of gear. I thought maybe I had pushed the shifter barely into neutral. Same thing happened again though, and my hand wasn't on the shifter. Has this ever happened to anyone? I assume this is the early stage of tranny failure. Ugh. Thoughts/Advice?
Jardim
SLIP! But yeah chances are your tranny is giving out...check the fluid?
Zappo
SLIP! But yeah chances are your tranny is giving out...check the fluid? Physically moving into neutral is NOT the same as the transmission slipping.
goobernoodles
Physically moving into neutral is NOT the same as the transmission slipping. I can't really say if it literally went into neutral or not. All I know is the car suddenly (while WOT) gave out.
Zappo
ok, well there is a difference. What does your fluid look like and is it full?

PyROTech
is it going into neutral and coming back into gear when its a different gear? are you low on fluid? any banging into gear after the slip/catching suddenly?
goobernoodles
Didn't drive/get a chance to check the fluid today. I'll check tomorrow. Checking ATF levels should be done with the car at operating temp, right? If fluid levels are normal tomorrow, I'll see if I can replicate the issue on video. It was very sudden and unexpected both times it happened that it's hard to pull out the details. The car was accelerating fast, then all of a sudden it wasn't - and I immediately got off the gas both times.
Zappo
There are two marks on the dip stick when checking the trans fluid, hot and cold. Flip it over to see the other one. Check the fluid with the engine running. Did you have to physically move the shifter back into drive?

Zappo
Then Jardim was correct and the trans is most likely dying. Check your fluid level and color. You described it differently to me in your texts.
goobernoodles
I guess it could have been taken as though the shifter somehow went into neutral by itself by what I said. To clarify: initially... I thought perhaps I barely pushed the shifted forward while WOT, causing the car to lose power. It never physically went into the neutral shifter position. I just thought that since my hand was on the shifter, there was the chance I somehow pushed it forward enough to put it into neutral. The second time there was no question, as my hand was not by the shifter. Back to that crappy feeling I had before. heh. Q's: 1) Should I look to get this tranny rebuilt? 2) Where is the best place to find the parts for a manual swap? 3) I'm drunk, Happy new years. Zappo
1) Should I look to get this tranny rebuilt? no. Easiest thing to do is to install a used one. 2) Where is the best place to find the parts for a manual swap? Volvospeed. :)
