Brake Light Switch?

Kit Vexed

Recommended Posts

got pulled over today for having no brake lights??

didnt know as there was no indicator light on the dash when i put the brakes on that anything was out..

also the high mount brake light in the car isnt working; what are the chances ALL brake lights are out??

checked the fuse and it's fine..

only conclusion is the switch..

any of you guys ever replace one? i haven't even gotten in there yet to see since its raining here, but it would save me some time if i knew what part # since many come up in the search or even a pic since they all seem to look diff?

prices are ranging from $50+ to under $10 (hoping the one for me is the latter).

thanks!

the car has 220K on it so that's a pretty good run on a switch.. i wouldnt be totally shocked if it needed replacement..

is it that metal type with the button, threads and two prongs or the black plastic box plug type?

know what i mean?

its located where? the brake arm in the footwell waaaay up?

hey guys, just wanted to follow up..

got under the dash today and it was absolutely the switch and it absolutely needed to be adjusted! thanks chuck and BEJ

for those of you who may have this problem, the switch is a black plastic box with a yellow connector going into it..

there is a buttom on the end that stays compressed by the brake pedal arm when not touching the brake..

when you touch the brake, the arm naturally goes AWAY from the switch and the buttom slides forward telling the wire harness you're on the brakes..

when these guys say "adjustment" they mean the switch itself can slide forward and back within its casing so the button is closer or further from the brake arm..

you'll hear it snap (kinda like tightening a ziptie) when adjusting and you can physically see just the buttom slide a tad forward or back

(just wanted to clearify this for anyone who didnt know a thing about this, like i didnt)

thanks again guys and i hope this helps someone in the future
