My Motor Build Thread

FINN

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I'm creating this thread so I have a place to ask questions as this is my first time building a motor of this caliber. Basically I am tearing the motor down for a few reasons: Rods are going in to support the 60trim. I had a slight compression issue in one of the cylinders. Plus now is the right time for maintenance items such as the timing belt, oil pan o-rings, and etc.... The car is also getting manual swapped.

Anyways here is where I am as of now. Almost done taking everything apart and this week I am going to talk to a few shops. Anyone have any good shops around the Dayton/Columbus area they are aware of?

Current state of the pistons.

Cylinder walls.

I really do not want to bore and go to larger pistons so hopefully the shop can just hone the block and I can get away with new rings. Thats it for now. Chime in if you have any ideas, thoughts, or words of wisdom. I am going to keep updating this very frequently.

excellent i always love new threads like this, have you bought your rods yet? whats you total budget for this bottom end?

if i may suggest, i would actually just go and buy rods/pistons/arp head studs off this man

this would give a solid bottom end with no worries and u mightaswell just do it if u can since ur already at that stage

how many mi on that motor? cross hatch still looks great

Probably 150k+. I do see a few vertical scores in the walls, so a hone at the very least.

How much power do you plan on putting out, and what kind of driving will you be doing with it?

The crosshatch usually looks good on these motors...mine looked perfect at 240K...but it's that ridge at the top where the rings have never touched. At the top of the bore it will be the most worn just under that ridge. The machine shop will do what's best for the motor but I wouldn't be surprised if you need to go with .02 over pistons. It is just enough to straighten out the bore and on the three blocks that I went through it was worn .010-.015" just under the ridge.

I'm staying tuned for this one, you always do a nice job Val.

John, ill go talk to them tomorrow...I know u had the flywheel resurfaced there. Tiz, yes using the R clutch. Didn't really plan on a lsd. Head is getting rebuilt with a 3 angle and port and polish. Other major pieces would be R manifold, atp ultimate wastegate, na cams, proper monitoring electronics, etc. Ill have to wait to see what the shop thinks of the pistons and bore.

Justus I went with a 60 after our chat.

Awesome to see the build!! I have my 2.3L with a probable bent rod, but it has other parts should you find you need something and I have it. Just a few minutes away as well.

There's performance clinic in beavercreek, but I'm not sure what they'd charge. Why don't you ask Dan? He could do the work for you.

I'm in agreement with Ben. The obvious wear right below that top lip is the reason these need a rebore. I'd also be surprised if you didn't need at least 1st oversize. Usually machine shops will want a little extra clearance if the motor is intended for high output use.
