I'm the first person to vote no?!? screw wastin time and money drillin for oil, spend the money on finding ALTERNATIVES to gasoline. The only reason we still use gasoline cars is because automakers and oil companies have their fingers in all kinds of projects across the globe. It's all about the profits baby :P

edit: also, seeing as how american made goods usually cost 2x as much as foreign goods, i bet a gallon of "clean good American oil" would cost alot more than that "dirty Iraq oil". Thats because Iraqi workers get paid very little to pump oil in comparison to an american oil driller. If you pay your employees more, you gotta jack up the price to cover your profits.

we americans can't charge alot for our cars because in many cases the foreign car runs about 2x as long at 1/2 the price (depending on the car of course). cars are cheap because they have to compete, but if we drill our own oil and sell it to ourselves, it could be a potential Bush-opoly  don't take me too seriously guys, just how i feel.

Every person who lives in Alaska gets a check from the federal government every year. There's an interesting idea floating around:

Alaska Bucks

Every year, American citizens in Alaska get an oil dividend check in the mail from the Alaska Permanent Fund. It comes two months before Christmas. The more oil pumped from Alaska that year, the bigger the check.

Why don't we offer to help the Iraqis create a similar dividend program for their people, an Iraq Permanent Fund?

Every Iraqi would get an equal share. Foreigners would be excluded. Citizens would protect the pipelines. An Iraq Permanent Fund - permanent income for all Iraqis - would benefit the common man. Its creation is a goal all could share.

If we Americans offer to help to set up their system, we might even become their friends once again. Lots of healing is needed there...

In Alaska, the State Constitution was amended in 1976 to put 25% of the State of Alaska oil income into a special savings account, the Alaska Permanent Fund. The Alaska Permanent Fund invests part of this income in stocks (so there will be cash in poor years). Then it sends a check to the state government and a check to every Alaskan citizen. Even the ten-year-olds get a check.

An Iraq Permanent Fund could do this for the Iraqi people.

If every Iraq citizen received a yearly oil dividend check from an Iraq Permanent Fund... permanent income... how might it change their world?

Terrorists could no longer bomb pipelines. All eyes would watch. All ears would listen.

Infiltrators would be filtered out. Visitors from other countries would have little reason to linger. The followers of the fundamentalists would become invested in their country's democratic future.

The poorest of the poor would no longer need to depend on Islamist charities, no longer need to sell their daughters into suicide. No Iraqi would be without a future. The lives of the poorest would improve the most.

One year's payout puts a computer on the table in every Iraqi home.

The Iraqi people would be delighted to learn that the world wants them to have their oil. If we Americans publicly support the idea of an Iraq Permanent Fund and push for its implementation, then the people of Iraq may begin to see us as the liberators we have hoped to be. By our offering to help Iraq institute a system that guarantees each citizen his share of the national wealth, we would invite the ordinary man to be our friend.

AlaskaBucks Info Center is a press resource. It can help staff writers and free-lancers research quickly the ongoing story of America's Alaskan oil dividend distribution, what it does for Alaskans, and how other countries are beginning to create similar funds.

With best wishes for a happier tomorrow,

very intersting post above, i didn't know alaskans got checks every year. I think that would change the way iraqi's think about oil. Of course you have to wrestle all that $$$ away from the rich guys who've owned the pipeline for however many years. 25% of the income from alaskan oil wells is alot of money, 25% of the income from Middle-Eastern oil wells would rocket Iraq from semi-3rd world status to the richest country in the world

Don't F up Alaska. Plus as said earlier is not that great of a solution. If we need more oil we should do what we always do. Build less efficient cars and kill foreigners.... err terrorists.
