Rear Mounted Turbo

so i was talking to 1 of my buddys with a rear mounted turbo in his z06 and i was wondering why no one in the volvo comminity has ever tried this. i know the purpose of rear mounted turbos is because of small clearance and not being able to mount in the engine bay, and the fact that it is super easy to install. i know some dsm owners run these and make well over 600hp obv with built engines but they are near or the same displacement as our 5 cyl. my buddy makes 906hp at 16psi and 100% methanol. I thought to myself this would allow 5cyl volvos to run a twin turbo or compound turbo setup. or as clearance becomes an issue would allow to run a T67 or bigger turbo. the obv down fall is turbo lag and 10+ feet of turbo plumbing. i know that a v8 has huge displacement and alot more exhaust flow than a 5cyl volvo. but the princapal remains the same. my buddys z06 starts makin boost at about 3200 and pulls ur eyballs into ur head after that lol. it would take some research on flow and desighn but i could imagine it would yield some amazing numbers. and could yield a sucsesful twin turbo 5 cyl motor. just a thought lol.http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/attachments/5-0l-talk/6616d1110818547-rear-mounted-turbo-kit-good-idea-what-do-u-think-rear-mounted-turbo.jpg heres a pic for those of you that dont know what a rear mounted setup is.

I was just researching those actually, with the expected dropoff of exhaust pressure Im assuming with our relatively small 2.3-2.5L engines it will be inefficient at best...

It seems to me that even just to maintain a nice exhaust pressure that far down the tract you would need to opt for smaller piping for spool, thus increasing backpressure but therefore reducing gains..

Would sure look cool though!

I've loved the rear mount turbo's for years, only cars I've seen it on are V8's but if the dsm guys can do it, with work I'm sure we could as well, and yes the sounds is multi orgasmic from those things!

Sooooo...who's gonna try it lol.

Rear mounted turbos are great for dyno queens, and cars with zero room in the engine bay for a turbo. Doing that on a Volvo would just be an exercise in silliness.

Agreed. With the gobs of room we do have behind the engine, there really is no point. Not to mention your car < z06 vette in terms of pressure/displacement. I.e. a vette has a lot of displacement to get that turbo going. So 3200 could translate to 4000 on your car.

Many other things are worth the hassle over rear mounted turbo's. Especially with a gas tank right there..

This is a total pipe dream. Were you smoking at the time this conversation took place?

There is no practical reason to even contemplate the plumbing nightmare this would be. Maybe you were thinking remove the passenger seat, mount the turbo through the floor & use it for heat as well? Kinda like those pics floating around the Webz of the 240 with a wood burning stove?

Some things are not worth consideration (on any Volvo) on any level, this is one of them

See now you're talking, that way you can save weight by removing the blower and other heat related components, Ingeniuos, just mount the exhaust facing the inside of the windshield and voila you have a killer defroster, no more scraping ice, the fumes just build character

All things are worth consideration, well as long as someone else is considering them haha.

but ya pipe dream for sure.
