Abs Issues...need Help.

Ever since I bought my 98 v70 it has been having ABS issues. It will disable the ABS and Traction control randomly and will sometimes turn back on all in the same trip. So far I have seen no consistency as to when it happens.

Personally I don't care about the traction control I'm concerned with the ABS, when it fails the brake pedal will pulse (if you're already applying brake) and doesn't fully engage until the ABS fully disabled, or until you lift your foot off the pedal (not good in an Oh Crap situation). Thats my main concern as sometimes family members drive it.

I know the ABS module does go bad on most of the v70s, but before i go and replace that I wanted to be sure that it wasn't a sensor or something. So heres the questions...

1. Besides the actual ABS Module and Sensors Is there anything else that can fail?

2. Is there a way to test the Module? And the sensors?

Thanks in advance.

Wiring occasionally...more so if the front end has been touched without unplugging the sensors or if the wiring has been rubbing against the endlinks.

Sensors...not too often.

You can test the module on another car, but that's about it. You can test the sensors and the wiring going to them straight from the harness using a multimeter, but this won't always detect a physically damaged sensor, tone ring, loose axle or things like that.

Typically it plays out like this.

95% of the time it's the module.

5% of the time it's a wiring or sensor issue.

96-98's are essentially stand-alone as far as the abs system goes, so you don't have to worry about much else screwing with the system outside of the ignition switch or a voltage problem....you aren't networked.

Start with the easiest stuff first.

Click on my website in my sig and go to the troubleshooting page. The pinout diagram and resistance specs are there. Should only take a few minutes to test.

If you want you can then pull each wheel and pull out the sensors and clean them. At the same time you can inspect the tone rings.

You can almost bet that if it's the original module then that's the problem. I can open up 1000 of them and maybe find a handful that have zero cracking of any kind inside.
