Rattle At Cold Start

It was darned cold this morning -15... yea arg 15 below not 15 above :-(. At start there was a bearing type ratte, i got my mechanics scope just as quickly as my frozen bones could, but by the time i got in there it had allready started to quiet down, though it was making some noise still it was hard to locate, it sounded absolutely fine after the car was warmed up. Was it just that the alternator was working at full tilt or what? The car started right up, so i dunno how hard the alternator could be working.

I guess it could also have been my air pump dying, its been slowly dying for a long time, and that might exaplin why i was not able to definitively locate the sound while poking around by the serp belt. But this was more a rattle than a whine.

I am really hoping to avoid doing anything until its gets warmer since my garage is not heated, any tips to tide me over?
