FAST850R
Hello, I just now finished installing front shocks for 1996 850r. I'm about to work on rear tomorrow. I have read some DIY threads and found out that I need to pb blast those bolts. So after pb blasting them, can I just use an impact wrench to unbolt them? It looks like they are easy to break, but I'm not so sure. Thanks
Dick Dastardly
Impact should take them off. They might start spinning (the shaft) in which case you would need an offset (14 or 15mm?? can't remember atm) box wrench and I think a 7mm open end or an allen key (depending on what brand of shock) to hold the shaft in place.. ozzimark
Shouldn't be too hard to break free. I loosened mine with an 18" breaker bar, then used an open-end wrench with an allen wrench to prevent it from spinning to get it the rest of the way off. FAST850R
Thank you for the replies. I guess it's ok to use an impact wrench for the bolts. It helped a lot while I was working on front shocks. I highly recommend it to anybody who is going to replace shocks.Oh by the way, I am talking about the 2 bolts that hold rear shocks. Not the center one....sorry if I make you guys confused.
erikv11
If you are talking about the two shock mount bolts, I would never hit them with an impact. They are prone to breakage and/or breaking off the nut that is welded to the frame underneath. I would hit them with PBblaster from below, then loosen them slowly. Unscrew a little, get a dab of PB in there, thread back down. The problem is the threads are exposed so they get very rusty.

Matty Moo
Impact is king with those things. Hell yes. Only takes seconds to get them off, with no spinning.
FAST850R
Thank you for the replies. I'll take time to unbolt them. I'll use an impact wrench for the top middle bolt :)
