1996 850R Sedan Rear Shock Diy Question

Hello?

I'm middle of replacing rear shocks and springs, and I have a problem.

How do I remove the shock? Do I jack up the car or pry out when it sits on the ground??

I had no problem with unbolting the top bolts and bottom one, but I can't remove the shock itself.

I tried to use a long pipe to pry it out but before I do it wrong way, I want to ask here.

I have 2 DIY thread but by looking at the pictures, one was car sitting on ground and one with jacked up.

I'm confused.

Please let me know how I should remove the shock.

Thank you

With the car on jackstands, I jack the wheel up so it is not pulling the shock all the way open but tension is just off the springs then gently pry off the shock off of the lower stud.

I'm so frustrated. Everything looks damn easy but I can't remove the strut!

I feel like if I push further, I will break the lower stud.

What the hell.

I tried to remove it by lifting up the spring so it release the tension from the strut, but nothing works.

I used a mallet to hit the pry bar to remove it, it doesn't work.

It's been 2 hours with the one shock and because of the space I'm working on it, my whole body achs.

Sorry about my rant but this sucks

sorry dude that sux, it shouldn't be that hard...maybe try some blaster in there. Take a break and grab a beer and sandwich. It is about lunchtime in Cali...

Since your replacing, you could knock it reallty hard but you want to be careful because if you break that stud it will really be a pita to get fixed...not impossible just...

So just so everyone's clear....the upper mount is free (the two bolts holding each mount to the body are off) and the shock is still attached to the mount? Also, the nut on the transverse arm stud (lower shock attachment) is off?

You should probably soak the stud as much as possible with some PB blaster or otherwise and see if that helps. I had a good deal of powdery corrosion in there but the shock just popped off once i got the rear end jacked up just enough that the upper mount was able to move around easily (the downward stress of the shock was relieved).

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I don't understand. I didn't have any rust problems and the notorious top 2 bolts were piece of cake to remove. I had no problem what so ever till I tried to reomve the shock itself.

I did front shocks yesterday and they were piece of cake....I don't get it.....

I t seems like the shock bonded to the stud. I put a long pipe between the strut and frame, and i hammered with a mallet. I didn't even move.

Damn....I even lost my grip to trying removing the damn thing....

Yes, everything is off. No bolts, the top mount moves freely.....the bottom 18mm bolt is not......that's why I don't get it.....

I did use pb blaster 2 hours ago.... I will apply more now and Im heading to ace hardware store to buy a bigger pry bar.

Ok, I bought a 30" pry bar and tried to remove the strut, and failed.

I will rest a bit, eat lunch and try it one more time. If I fail this time, I will take it to a shop.

No more stress and frustration from the damn thing.

What a pain in the ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD job. I was bottom of my car almost 3 hours with the one strut.

Tired.

I wish I could be more help...Did you get the other side? Sometimes it helps motivate me when I get one done easy peasy to just knock the other one out! Or worst case you only have to pay to have one done...

Did you try putting some heat to that thing??? Propane torch is your friend here... then some more blaster then...

Maybe carefully align your tools to max the leverage and just knock the crap out of the thing to lever it off. There comes a point where it is either coming off or breaking off. If your reasonably close to a welder

This is a good argument for using antisieze on those studs...

Ok, I tried it again and it worked.

30" pry bar was the best purchase I made for the job.

I guess soaking it with PB blaster for a few hours worked.

Thank you for all the replies.

I did the other side after lunch and the other side was very eassy. It poped right away.

After that I took more time and did the PIA side, and it worked.

Thanks the commissar.

Great job! Don't forget a little antisieze after you clean it up a touch...so next time won't involve so much work time and you have more beer (or whatever) time left over

on that other nut, I don't remember it being difficult, just unbolted it...

Thank you.

I finished installing shocks and springs. I figured out how to remove those nuts too.

What a big differences from 16 years old shock and springs.
