I Hope This Isn't A Sign Of Something Bad

I've noticed that during the first few minutes of a cold-weather start, there is a strange clunking noise coming from near the timing belt side of my engine. After popping the hood for further inspection, I can see a small metal piece directly next to the bottom right corner of the radiator expansion tank (when looking into the engine from the front of the car) seems to be slipping, and popping out of place. It makes a quite unsettling sound until about 1-2 minutes or so, and I wonder if this is just a cold weather symptom or could this be a sign of something worse?

Hi!

I have the same kind of "problems" lately, namely strange noises when starting the car when cold.

But then I thought about it and it is -20C without the wind chill effect ,which drops the temperature down to -35C, and it has been like this for a few days now!

So it is normal that everything is just frozen up, and I am just happy that the car starts without a hitch!

The accelerations are hard, the brake pedal is really stiff and the gear shifts aren't smooth for the first few minutes, but that's normal too, the oil is just so cold and lost its viscosity.

So I guess what you are describing looks like what is happening here!

I haven't opened the hood to check anything, and don't feel like it with these temperatures.

Happy winter!

cold weather makes the car have weird noises and electrical problems with alot of cars. When around -25c my vans interior lights flash on and off for the first 5min of driving. And i also get a screeching noise when pressing the brake and also other noises, but after car warms up everything goes back to normal.
