Oil Leak From Turbo Line?

Recommended Posts

I am a new 2000 V70 R AWD owner.

When I had the PPI done, I had the oil changesd to Mobil 1. Now I have a pretty decent oil leak.

I got under the car and cleaned everything off. I satarted the car and did not see any leaks. I took it for a hard 5 minute run and when i got under the car oil was everywhere - it was literally dripping from all the parts I had just cleaned. I was very suprised at the amount of oil that leaked from such a short (albeit intense) drive.

I have read about the oil return line, but I can not see it. The oil looks like it maybe possibly could be coming from this area, but I can not tell for sure.

Is the turbo oil return line the likely culprit or are there any other possibilities?

Aslo, when at idle the car sounded like it was trying to mimick Ian Andersons (JetrhoTull) flute playing. I swear it sounded like he was in the engine playing away. Is this a common noise or is this a precurser to something like a turbo going bad?

Thanks in advance.

I doub the leak would be coming from the turbo return line, unless it was leaking prior to the service you had done.

Remove the black(blue) plastic engine cover and see if you see oil underneath the cover.

Clean the area well and take the car for a drive, and recheck. If area is wet with oil, then most likely culprit is a worn out, brittle oil cap gasket. The oil would run down backwards and down the back of the engine.

Hope all you need is a $3 gasket.

While synthetic oil is in many ways superior to standard dino oil, the probablility of leaks when switching to synthetic on medium to high mileage cars is relatively high.

This is not to say that synthetic oil causes leaks, but due to the molecular makeup of synthetic (and detergent additives), it more easily finds its way through weak gaskets and seals.

Given your desctiption, it sounds like some of the gaskets/seals were in poor shape prior to your change to Mobil 1.

Switching back to dino oil may help minimize the issue or make it go away altogether. Or you can dry to determine which gaskets/seals are the culprits and replace....which may need to be done anyway given your description of the amount of oil leaking.
