Jazzy_J
Hey all. So since the beginning of the year my 98 v70 T5 has been having random misfires about every 2 or 3 weeks (i have labeled it as her time of the month)....It usually throws at least 3+ misfire codes. For instance yesterday i drove to work with no problems....went to lunch and it started misfiring. Came back to work still misfiring....went to go home and no more misfire.....WTF??? it will do this at random, sometimes for multiple days. It is not a steady misfire and only seems to do it at idle (that i can tell). Really at a loss on what to do next. So the things I have replaced. - Coil w/ MSD - Cap and Rotor w/ Bosch. - Wires w/ IPD - Plugs w/ Volvo OEM. Things I am replacing today (not because of the issue). - Intercooler hoses. - PCV system. - and a few other Snabb intake goodies. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.
SlapShot
As others have mentioned in previous threads, you have to make sure you don't have a boost leak somewhere. Also, have you routed your CPS and RPM sensor wires correctly? The coil/distributor can cause electrical interference. Make sure the plug leads are coming out of the distributor cap ~ 2PM position and the sensor wires are as far away as possible. After I swapped my engine I had a few random symptoms directly related to both of these problems. Go over each intercooler hose connection thoroughly...just because it looks tight doesn't mean it is. Soapy water is a good way to confirm a leak you can hear while you're pressurizing the system.
Jazzy_J
As mentioned above intercooler hoses have been replaced today....so will see if that helps, when i took them off i did not see any signs of cracking. No boost leak as far as i can tell, have checked all lines. I did not see any routing issues with he RPM or CPS sensor but will check again. Serge
Cam shaft seal on the cap and rotor okay? A leaky seal can cause oil to gunk up the cap and rotor.
Jazzy_J
^^^ this could be it. While replacing the PCV system i noticed a bit of a leak near the cam seals...going to be ordering those as i dont like oil leaks. I also replaced most of the vacuum lines and rerouted the RPM and CPS wires so they were no where near the plug wires. On a side note... the PCV system is a PITA to do... Keaton85
Or the cam position sensor could be oily as well. Also check around the vac tree base as that tends to leak and you would hardly notice or find it.
Jazzy_J
resealed the VAC tree today when i did the PCV system, just to be sure. And reran the CBV line as well.
Jazzy_J
Just thought id follow this up with he results.... Had an oil leak coming from the rear of the front cam. So I changed the rear cam seal and when I went to do that i noticed oil caked up in the distributor (cleaned out easily), and the old seal just fell out.. i didnt have to touch it. Popped the new oil seal in, reassembled the thing and havent had any problmes thus far (misfires or oil leaks). Thanks.
