Double Din Install

Question. Going to be putting in a double din unit. I read Adam's how-to on his double din install where he recommends using the Pioneer ADT-VA133 because obviously no one makes an installation kit for our car. I'm not going to be getting a Pioneer and looking at all of the double din installs, just about everyone is using a Pioneer unit. Will this sleeve work with a head unit other than a Pioneer?

Thanks for your help.

Not sure if it will be a direct fit for other brand head units, but both DDin installs I've done I've used whatever sleeve I had, and just drilled my own holes as needed. Basically, just make sure you measure twice and drill once.

I read that write up. That sleeve that you're screwing to the head unit, that's not the one that sits in the opening is it? I mean, I know the head unit I order will have the sleeve that the head unit sits in, but I need the cage that stays in the opening and the head unit sits in, which is what the Pioneer cage is. So I need to know if the sleeve that comes with a head unit that's not Pioneer, if it will sit in the sleeve that stay in the cage in the stereo opening. Or perhaps I will just have to slide it in and use some double sided sticky tape like I saw ghostshadow recommend in another thread.

I only used one sleeve, which is fastened to the headunit. See the part where I drill holes in the dash opening for tabs to slide into---that's how the sleeve pictured above is fastened to the dash.

So there isn't a second sleeve? I haven't installed a stereo in a looong time. That sleeve pictured above is the only one involved? How did you bend the tabs up into the dash with the stereo screwed to it?

Oook, so the head unit doesn't come with a cage, and that's what you get in the installation equipment that typically comes with a head unit. So I need the Pioneer cage, I'll drill out two holes for the screws so I can screw the head unit to that, and then bend the tabs up into the dash. It's starting to all come back.

Yeah, I installed mine differently that Adam did in his 850. Either way will work, but its up to you to decide which way you want to go with.

You have the process right. Most headunits, if bought new, will come with a metal sleeve, but since I bought my headuiI got mine (for free!!) at Best Buy, or you can get one from Amazon.

Its pretty easy to use a screwdriver or pick to bend the tabs into the dash--there is enough space, see below

Awesome. Thanks for the help. And yeah, I can see now where you could reach up there. Well cool. I guess I'll get my HU and the Pioneer sleeve and just do what you did and drill my own holes.

Looking at a picture of the unit, it looks like it already comes with the cage and I wouldn't need to order the Pioneer cage. Adam said his didn't come with an installation kit, but this looks like it does.

It's a Jensen VM9424BT. Nothing super special. But it's cheap, and the reviews I've read seem to be all really positive. I like the the looks, watched a couple youtube videos and I like it. I like the backup camera too, blue tooth built in. Seems to be a nice unit for the price.

+1, it looks very good. Bluetooth is one of those things I thought I'd never really use, but now that I have it, its awesome.

Sonic is a great site, ordered a couple things from them, no issues.

FWIW, and to answer what I think was your origial question,

sleeves are generally brand and sometimes even model specific.

Don't count on an HU from one company fitting the sleeve of another.

And before you sock that sleeve down in the dash, be sure to get the

HU depth where you want it. And you'll most likely have to tweak on the

final DD face trim a bit. Sometimes they just fit, but you may need to make

some "adjustments" for a clean look.

Yeah, I was talking to my buddy about his and while we were talking about it, he got a call and the music faded out and the caller ID came up on the screen and he did the whole phone call right through the head unit. Basically solidified my choice in getting one.

OK, it looks like it's just a Pioneer thing that they don't come with the sleeve, because all of the other pictures I look at, all the headunits have the cages except Pioneers. And yeah, I read about possibly having to trim the bezel and what not.

Looks like a solid head unit, Gabe. Post up pics after yours is installed. I'm happy with my install except that the bezel for my radio sticks out about 1/8". It bothers me but I have no ideas how to get around it.

I'll be posting pics sooner rather than later. Gary bought my head unit before I bought this one, so I'll be rocking no HU for a week or so until I order this one and install it.

And this is why I have an old SC-811 in my garage with some CCR tapes...just in case
