850 Autobox - What Can It Take?

Hi Guys,

I don't regularly log on and visit mainly to do some quick visitor viewing but I always like what I see and you all seem to have much grander plans than most of us in the UK..

Anyway, over here in the UK I have 854R auto to which I have had some minor modifications done. It's currently running a TT with S60R greens, S60R exhaust manifold, JT full 3" system with 200 cell race cat and a 15G which has been modified to take a Garret T28 compressor wheel, so not a huge turbo by any means but an improvement over the standard none the less.

Anyway the engine has suffered an internal fault, suspect possible bent rod or fault with a rod bearing and I am looking to rebuild. I will obviously get uprated rods and it's likely, because the engine is apart, that I will fit some uprated pistons, unsure of what atm, and have some other little tweaks here and there to the breathing and the map.

At the moment the car doesn't have an oil cooler and has done 109,000 miles. Currently it does a 14.3 1/4 @ 101mph without a power start, so foot to the floor after the brake is released, never fancied trying anything else tbh, which I didn't think was bad considering alot of the 19T manual boys get that here with Dyno results over 300hp.

I've never had any odd behaviour from the box to date and even with a full poly mount setup the gear changes are seemless. I don't drive the car like I'm an F1 driver but I will be fitting the Volvo auxillary autobox oil cooler, for piece of mind, to fit inline with the standard radiator tank cooler setup so as to regulate gearbox oil temperature. I have had the oil changed regularly since just over 80k when I bought it, works out at roughly 10k per change and have always run Volvo branded Dextron III fluid as recommended by my local dealer. I know I should be ripping it out and fitting an M56 or such like but I actually really like the car as an auto but I thought it would be nice to get a little extra out the engine build to make it that little bit more worthwhile perhaps maybe get some lower 1/4 times as well

Has anyone got any experiences or thoughts they'd like to share about what an autobox is capable or, or not as the case maybe?

Thanks in advance guys :)

The trans can take quite a bit actually.

I'm on the OE cooler with Royal Purple fluid making over 300whp and 350wtq. It hasn't shown any signs of weakness...yet. The car has been a weekend car for about a year, and I don't always drive it like a D-bag....which may have something to do with it. It's seen quite a few races though.

I do have a newer style oil pan.

That's a smart set up and definately something to consider, thanks for your reply.

That's really encouraging, has your transmission done many miles and got good history from new? I'm guessing it has, how many miles have you done on the current spec?

also I put on oil filter on the trans...the spin on kind...you can see it under battery tray...just for piece of mind.

Impressive, what oil filter did you go for? I can see it's a screw on filter but did you look into flow quallities of the filter at all? Is the filter an OE filter for another car with an auto transmission?

Thanks for all your replies, makes for encouraging reading.
