Aftermarket Hu Clarification?

I purchased a 1993 volvo 850 back in October 2011 with 161,000 and absolutly love the car (my first car). Well needless to say the lack of cup holders has finally got to me. My plan is to put a single DIN aftermarket stereo in and (with recently purchased 89-95 Taurus) cup/coin holder to allow me to have drinks in my car.

While talking to a buddy of mine about this he told me when he replaced his stock system with an aftermarket SONY system he was only able to get a fraction of the volume through his stock speakers. I ONLY plan on replacing the deck not any speakers.

What would cause this and how can I ensure that I do not have the same problem? I found on here that it outputs 80w total. Is that for in any way effected by the HU or is that the max that the car will allow without an AMP?

Just use a wiring harness adapter and everything should be fine.

I'd be a little cautious about putting drinks right in front of the radio, though.

One hard stop and you could drown it. Aren't there better cupholder options?

The way I see it is that it would be cheaper for me to replace a faceplate than my all of the switches in my center console if something falls out of the arm rest cup holders. I looked into that option and that seems more of a pain if something hapens than adding a single din cup holder.
