C70 Dolby Surround Sound

I recently bought a '99 C70 convertible with the Dolby Pro Logic surround sound system. This is new to me, and I'm not quite sure how it works. Anyway, I'm curious if it is actually working right because I'm not sure what it is supposed to sound like. If I have a CD in and go through the three "modes" from normal stereo, to 3 channel to Pro Logic, there is a distinct separation of the sound spectrum when I go to Pro Logic - so something is working right - but if I then use the fader to play only the rear speakers, they sound somewhat "muffled." If I adjust the fader to be more balanced, I don't notice the muffled effect, but I'm not sure if it is gone or because the front speakers simply overwhelm it. Overall though, there does not seem to be a lot of sound from behind, though the speakers are definitely working. Does this sound like a "problem" common to Pro Logic, or just a normal chracteristic? Asked another way, what sort of problems do Pro Logic systems exhibit? Also, why would I ever use the "3 channel" mode?

Having muffled sound from only having your rear speakers on is a general problem. I myself don't even use the rears. This is happening because you're not experiencing the treble from the front speakers like you should and you're only getting the heavier midbass from the rears which makes the whole setup sound "muffled." As far as the dolby stuff goes. I can't help you out there.

If you read up on how Pro Logic works then I think you will understand.

You see, you arent really listening to true Dolby surround.

In order for that to happen somehting needs to be recorded in Dolby and played back in dolby.

Pro logic sort of fakes it.

Has something to do with a combined left right signal in the rears.

test this, in normal mode, fade to the rear. Are thespeakers muffled? If they are, then its another issue.

Then in dolby do it.

Its the same way when I play "Dolby Logic" on my older AV reciever. The rears dont sound really all that hot. Not nearly as good as a TRUE 5.1 or 6.1 or 9.2 system.

Someone wanna chime in here?

I completely agree. Ben's right. Think of it like when you play a standard audio cd in surround mode on a home theater system. The rear speakers won't play as loud as the front. They are there for the "filler" sound and help to "fake" the surround sound.

Again, test the speakers in normal mode and see what you get. The pro-logic system is really for the driver and front passenger, so don't expect to be sitting in the back seat with the dolby on and have it sound right.
