01 Timing Belt

I am about to replace the timing belt on an 01 motor. Exhaust has VVT. My typical timing marks would be, between the two notches on the crank pulley and the cam sproket notches straight up. Does this sound correct? The motor currently seems to have the cam sprocket notches past vertical one tooth and I feel like I should "fix" it.

Cam sprockets are not straight up. The cover on the front of the engine needs to be off, but the cover that goes over #1 sparkplug needs to be in place. You'll see 2 little square cutouts in that cover, the scribed lines in the cam gears should line up with those notches when the crank is lined up. Cam gear scribe marks are hard to see, but the will be at about 12:30 to 1 o'clock for exhaust, and 11 to 11:30 o'clock for intake. The way you propose it, the cam gear scribe marks will never both be straight up, they are times too far away from that, and if you do it the way you describe, good bye valves after they strike the pistons, if the ECU even lets you start the motor.

For VVT engines, turn engine 1/4 turn clockwise PAST the timing marks, then come back to the marks. That releases the VVT gear, and the gear won't move when you take the belt off. Otherwise, you have to take off the cam sensor on the Exhaust cam, and the plastic plug off the intake cam, and use a Volvo cam alighment tool (or aftermarket equivilent) You don't really want to have to do that if you can avoid it.

The sensors and plug are out as I am putting this in a 97R and I need a distributor etc.

I am using the cam cover slots as mentioned and acquired the instructions on "how to".

Thanks for the replies.
