This is too cool!

I picked up a spare vent at the JY this morning, I'm gonna give this a shot.

I have the grom unit with the cord run to the center console, but I'm tired of lifting the console to change music, especially when I've got a drink lol.

And a question for those with the wireless OBD2 readers... Did you modify the OBD port so that when the reader is plugged in, the console cover will still shut?

I know right?? Speaking of your thought above about wanting to put the touch in the center.... if you used the center vent that is double wide you could ditch both of those vents and make an insert there that holds 2 touches. That way you could get say a 64g touch for one side to store a shit load of music on and do a matching one next to it of a smaller hard drive size to save a few bucks and use that just for car apps. Wire the music one into the stereo and wire the other one just for power. Then run any/all the ODBII apps you want on the touch for just apps and run any other app stuff you might want that is car related. shrug.gif

keep your vents and just do a car pc install where the stereo is. /done

not a bad idea just overthinking it a bit imho

Nice Cameron!

I have a new KIWI for sale at a discount if you decide you want one. Don't need it. pm is interested I want to get rid of it.

ORLY? I'll pm you here in a minute. Don't need one quite yet but won't pass up a good deal if one is available.

And a question for those with the wireless OBD2 readers... Did you modify the OBD port so that when the reader is plugged in, the console cover will still shut?

im assuming they dropped the obd port into the console more but kept the obd cover on so it looks seamless.

I don't have this part in action yet, it'll come after I get the rest of the thing situated and installed. But yes, my plan for wireless OBDII dongle is to drop the OBDII connector and move it so the armrest can sit normally.

these screen shots are all standing up, can they go horizontal?

Yes, the Dash Command app will run horizontal too. Before I go with it though I'll call them or email them to ensure it'll work in horizontal mode all the time. I have found that many apps that will run in horizontal/landscape mode won't auto adjust to that orientation on start up. A lot of them like to start in vertical/portrait mode and won't rotate until you rotate the iPod physically back to vertical and then back to horizontal again. That obviously won't do when you're semi-permanently mounting it like this. It has to be an app that will start up fine in landscape.

For example, the standard music player app that comes loaded on all iPods/iPhones will NOT work in permanent landscape mode. It gets "stuck" in portrait mode. Plus when you do get it into proper landscape mode it calls it "coverflow" which looks cool, but the functionality SUCKS and wno't allow you to navigate through stuff easily. The app in the pics above I used to solve this is called "CarTunes" and it works great and is perfectly happy running in landscape mode all the time with no loss in proper control.

keep your vents and just do a car pc install where the stereo is. /done

Definitely another option. For what I'm doing, the iPod mount in the vent is the best and cleanest solution in my eyes. If I ever decide to get really crazy with it and want a bunch of functionality car PC is where it's at for sure.

Next step pics. Got the vent flapper slide control and holder pieces cut out and did a test fit without the iPod to make sure the cradle with sit in there as I want it to. Juuuuust about perfect:

Only "area of concern" I have now is that the dock connector cable where it'll pop through the dash with this all mounted is likely going to interfere with the little spring clampy thing that holds the side window vent piece thing in place on the side of the dash facing the window. No biggie though I can find a way around that :)

Only thing now before I install the whole shebang all together is waiting for the long cable I ordered to show up. The standard iPod cable is not *quite* long enough to route the way I want so I ordered a black cable that is 6 feet long. Should be a touch more stealth and have plenty of extra length. I'm thinking about removing the rubber insert for the coin tray and drilling an access hole in the bottom of it for the cable to come through on the USB end where it connects to the head unit. Drill a hole big enough for the USB connector, then grommet it so the cable head doesn't just fall back though. That way, when I want to play the iPod, just lift the coin tray lid and plug the cable in. When it's not plugged in, just drop the cable back down and close the coin lid. About as stealthy as I can get it I think without getting a different head unit that has a USB hub in the back of it. This way too it'll still be nice and easy to just attach that USB cable end to my laptop for changing music on the iPod.

it would be cool to make a mount for the iphone that you can remove when you get out of the car that works similar to this...

I thought the same exact thing. I just couldn't figure out any way to do it properly with the dock connector. I really like the integrated look of it as is where it's fully behind a panel. If there was some way to have a pivoting dock connector or something so you could click the dock connector on then pivot/snap it into place that would be ideal but I just don't see how that would work.

I do have an iPhone though that I use for Pandora in the car sometimes though so I've been trying to think of a good way to integrate a mount like that for it. So far I've been trying to figure out a clean way to put an iPhone dock base into the ashtray. Then I could just pop open the ashtray and set the iPhone onto it to connect to the HU and charge as well. We'll see if I ever get to that.
