i just did a trans on a 94 volvo 850T Automatic. I had a used good transmission from a 98 s70, after i Installed the transmission im having this stupid flashing arrow, and it is stuck in 3rd gear. the transmission was deffinatly good I drove it befor it was dismantled. I check the codes and it says TPS I replaced the TPS and still flashing. is the 98 s70 auto trans compatiable with the 850. it is a AW 50-52 i think. I woant to be sure that the trans is not compatiable or ther is another issue befor i drop the trans out again :monkey: . any help would be awsome thanks in advance.

No experience with an 850, my 98 V70 T5 Auto has the three mode buttons on the shift console, S, E, W. Sounds like your stuck in W. Don't know if the TCUs are different or not. Sorry can't be more help, but thought that any data at this juncture could be of benifit.

Just spitballing what about the trans control modules in the box? Swap them out too? Seems the trans would need it's software to function correctly, I bet it's modified from 97+ ..could be why it's stuck in W.

Without that S/E/W Button, might be an issue. Was anything possibly left unplugged in the tunnel?

Sorry for the multiple posts, I don't know how to edit. If the light is flashing, I think it's a transmission related fault. Like a bad solenoid, etc. Even in Winter mode, the light should NOT flash.

Keep us posted...Hope it's something simple.

Your in limp mode...

yes the transmissions are essentially the same, both aw50-42's but sensors are different iirc..

IE; speed sensors and such

the flashing arrow means there is a trans code and its in limp mode.

Tps code comes up when ever the dreaded flashing arrow appears, i had the tps code thrown when i sandwiched the bracket in the intake mani doing the pcv, and once when a fuel pump went..

Did you happen to grab the flexplate and the TCU with the new trans?

You can get around the flexplate, but you should always grab the TCU.

First thing first, check check all the trans connections.

Do you know the history of this trans? aside from the fact that it drove?

could be why it's stuck in W.

Its not stuck in winter mode

94's, even late model turbos, didn't have ABS speed sensors i don't believe. All the transmissions do have speed sensors though, i believe? I know my 93 doesn't have the ABS sensors, and I don't remember if it was midyear 95 or beggining of 95 where the ABS speed sensor dealio.

So a quick check to know if your speed sensor is bad if that is the case, does the speedometer move at all when you drive?

The speed sensor on my 93 goes haywire on occasion, and the speedo doesn't work but magically comes back in to action.

Being a 94, read the OBDI codes on the transmission. I bet you it is chock full of them, more than the TPS code. You can do the 5 flicks to position II to reset the blinking light if you can't do OBDI, but, it'll come right back if something is messed up obviously.

Otherwise, if they are infact different sensors or even different solenoids etc that would return different values to the TCU, you might want to get that TCU....otherwise everytime it runs it's checks your gonna get thrown in limp mode. dunno what changed for 98 s70 auto trans, but, ME4.4/4.3 should have no issues with any of the TCUs
