Please Help, Getting Crazy On Timing Setup.

Hi there guys, well everything was running good on my S60T5 with the K24 setup, at idle the rpms was droping abit low for a second or two, everything else was perfect. We check with my mechanic which is volvo dealer tec, the dice info about how was the angle of the cams and saw alos the openin 1,2,3,4 too so we can check the parameters.

The info was:

opening 1 +20 deg.

opening 2 +20 deg

opening 3 +20 deg

opening 4 +20 deg

Angle 19 deg. KW. <--------------- we new this number was totally wrong, should be between -7 to +7.

So we start to check with the align tool from volvo in the back of the cams, and start to see how much should we adjust the cam pulley. We corrected to get aprox +2.3 deg KW, but here is where my nightmare began. If you make the rpms goies about 2000 rpms and up, the vale stock to -5 deg KW and the engine start to idle really bad. We never saw the openings change degrees any time.

No i cant drive my car, we tested a new VVT sensor and the same happens, after you press de gas pedal, the angle get stock in -5. I hope someome here can gives some clue of what happens, i dont see why after a rebuild or after we started to move today the timing the variable cam pulley can be damage or something.

Thanks MDlimy, we installed the tool and checked the aligment of the cams pulley(both sides), tested and the same result. Then we started to adjust the variable cam with the 3 bolts and we got 2.3 deg. KW which was almost between Vida numbers, but exactly at that moment the problem began about the ange of the cam got stock to -5.

I dont see the point to buy a variable cam pulley hub just for a test, i thing that part is really rare to be damage(i hope). BTW my car has just one VVT cam in the exhaust.

thanks wizzard for your post, i will borrow a sensor for a friend and see what happens. yesterday we tested with another VVT solenoid and the same...starts ok, but you press the gas pedal and the idle goes bad again. Check codes and the same ECM-3000

this nightmare is not by far resolved, we did (i think) the aligment process for the VVT, following vadis/vida instuctions with my volvo tech friend, Well after we finish we start the Engine and saw that the angle was about 25 deg KW a way off(should be -7 -- +7. Then we loose the 3 bolts on the hub so we can start to make adjustment or fine tune, we got no more than 14 deg KW, you can see on the pictures that the pulley is completly on the left side limit, we cant get this resolved and im frustrated right now.

I think the VVT hub is still not positioned correctly on the cam. The Volvo procedure for setting up and installing the hub is VERY confusing (to me anyway).

I've had good luck doing it this way, try it and see how you make out. First, you need to try and get the gear back to the original position on the hub. Hopefully you can see the impression made by the 3 bolts, and put it back to that position. If you can't get it back exactly where it was, put it in the middle, but you may have to make some small adjustments when you are done.

- Set the motor on TDC and remove the T-belt

- Lock the cams from the rear, preferably with the Volvo lock tool

- Before you remove the hub to re-position it, you can actually check to see if it's positioned correctly. Grab the gear with your hand and you will notice that it is spring loaded and you can turn it back and forth slightly. The amount of movement should be almost exactly 2 teeth. If the hub is positioned correctly, the gear will be 2 teeth to the left of TDC (on the plastic cover) when turned to the left (unloaded). Now turn the gear as far to the right as possible (loaded). You'll notice the spring tension as you turn the gear to the right. Here's the important part. When the gear is loaded or turned to the right, the mark on the gear should be at TDC. My guess is, by looking at your pictures, your gear (when loaded) probably turns past TDC. If it's off, just remove the center bolt and get the hub positioned so that the mark is at TDC when the gear is fully loaded. Check it with Vida when you're done, just to make sure it's within spec (-7 to +7)
