goobernoodles
I've had sporadic boost seemingly since I've swapped in an 18t and got a tune and I'm trying to figure out what's currently going on. I have nearly no boost (5-6lbs if I stomp on it) most of the time. On long drives that start with low boost, I've usually realized that I suddenly had 16-17lbs of boost later on while driving. Some times the issue goes away for a few days, then reappears. Pretty frustrating. Since the swap and tune, I've replaced the stock intercooler hoses with silicone, as well as replacing old vacuum lines with silicone. I ordered a new TCV from IPD this week thinking that might be the cause of the boost issue. I'm currently running a first gen. IPD TCV that Lucky was running in his car when we did the swap. I've also been developing more and more smoke when giving the car gas after the car has been idling for a bit. I'm thinking valve stem seals, which sucks, but maybe there's a chance these issues are related. I can take a video if that would help. Anyone have any thoughts? goobernoodles
If the smoke is from valve stem seals, then obviously that's not causing my issue. Just thought I'd throw that in there after one of the shops I talked to about the smoke suggested I look at the turbo first, then valve stem seals as the cause of the smoke. The turbo is only a few months old, freshly rebuilt from Spanky.
survolvo
I'm currently running a first gen. IPD TCV that Lucky was running in his car when we did the swap. This is most likely the boost problem. I think thats why they took them off the market for p-80s. I have the new one sitting on my broken engine so haven't got to play with it. I have the AC Delco ($30) on my other 850 and have been pleased with it. I might swap over the the IPD one tonight just to test it out and use it. Right now its just $90 piece of metal. CBoosT5
try tcv, it sounds the most logical. hopefully that solves it! otherwise let us know!
goldponcho
Phil, if it helps I can bring my Volvo tcv over this weekend, along with the ipd tcv currently installed in the wagon. Were you having this same issue before swapping to the ipd part, I can't remember......
goobernoodles
We swapped to that TCV after one drive with the new turbo and tune due to a bit of boost fade. I didn't have any issues for about a week until my MAF blew up. Ever since, it's been off and on. I think I tossed the original BCS, but I'll look around. I'm not sure how long it's going to take IPD to put together a new TCV and ship it out. They're currently back ordered, and I'm getting different stories of when they'll be shipping. survolvo
Don't wait for IPD. spend half the money and live without the "IPD" sticker. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Boost-Control-Solenoid-valve-BCS-MAC-35A-AAA-DDBA-1BA-turbo-PWM-EMS-ECU-/330734891233

What about the nipples/nozzles?
goobernoodles
I'm really glad I decided to go to the ARD tuning meet yesterday. I swapped out my TCV with a new one Lucky had on hand, and I saw the same issues. At the suggestion of George and Lucky, I yanked open the wastegate line to the TCV and drove the car carefully. I was able to get up to 10psi without issue ruled out a turbo/WG issue. Swapped in an stock 850R ECU and bam I had stock boost levels. It turned out my ECU was failing to some degree. Lucky burned my tune to a new ECU - and the car feels better than it ever has. I decided to upgrade to 4.4 in the process so no more rear O2 CEL. So far it also appears that my car doesn't smell like shit nor produce the poofs of smoke after idling as it had been doing. I'm hoping this isn't a placebo effect, but if we fixed the boost issue, smoke issue and my CEL's all in one day that would be amazing. Thanks again to Lucky. Edit: The smoke issue is still there - it was just the placebo affect of having boost again making me have euphoric feelings of everything being perfect with the car.
