Which Tranny Is Strongest?

I have a 1995 850 turbo getting up there in miles. I am constantly going to the local junkyards for various parts and am thinking about looking for a replacement transmission to have on hand for when mine finally goes out.

Which automatic tranny is the best choice for a direct swap into my car?

Did the trannys get any better in the V70s and if so, do they directly bolt in to my 1995?

Are there any tricks to removing them from a junkyard car? (the cars are already drained of fluid and are raised up off the ground.)

Thanks

Totally. I had a 430hp Z32 5sp, stage 3. HUGE fun - except commuting at 10kph, below the minimum idle speed of 1st. Despite a monster clutch, I still had to adjust weekly, and replaced 2 in 20k kms. Never on any earlier manuals, but none of the earlier cars had that sort of plate destroying torque. Great second car for a Volvo wagon owner.

I recommend you look for a 850 or V70 turbo, that has an external oil cooler fitted, and clean oil inside. With an external cooler, they seem to last last forever. I have 2 here - a V70 GLT done 160k mi with a tranny cooler, it still shifts like new, and a T5 850 done 130 mi that shifts the same. Neither have ever had any work other than regular 'flushes'.

The 50-42 has its problems but most (aside from the reverse issue) can be avoided.

In line with the comment above... add an aux trans cooler, Use lucky's tcu mod to increase flow, and do regular services and youll be fine.

Yea, I wouldn't want a manual if I lived in the bay area either. Spend your life savings on clutches.

Exactly - this particular car spends a lot of time sitting in traffic. Plus, I am perfectly happy with the way my auto tranny puts the power down. (I usually switch to sport mode as soon as I enter the city - it is nice to be able to blow the cabbies away when launching from stop lights.) I am already having to watch out for wheel spin (the car is slightly moded) - with a manual I would have to pay that much more attention.

Which car does the 50-42 come from and if the reverse issue can't be avoided is there a better tranny?

This is the first I have heard of Lucky's tcu mod to increase flow - sounds awesome - where do I find that?

Is it obvious when a tranny has a cooler and/or cooler fittings?

When I am looking inside the engine compartment at the junkyard, are their identifying markings on the tranny that will identify what I am looking at?

So far my tranny has been great so I am hoping it last forever but want to be prepared just in case. I can't have this car out of service for long if something were to happen. I flush it regularly, and now that I think about it, I think it has an external cooler, but will double check.

From what I know the 50-42 came in all the 850 / 70 series difference withe the n/a and the turbo is final drive. With that said the reverse issue is a centrifugal clutch that wears down over time, I have a 96 and havent had reverse for a while. Something changed in 97 with the clutch because i rarely hear about it happening 97 and up.

This is the first I have heard of Lucky's tcu mod to increase flow - sounds awesome - where do I find that? Here is the mod itself --->

reasoning for doing it

Is it obvious when a tranny has a cooler and/or cooler fittings? All autos use the radiator for cooling, but a aux trans cooler is more efficient

there is a kit you can buy (or i can help you buy) from the dealer that is a factory aux trans kit.

that being said, as far as i know there's no difference in the 4-speed auto trannies that showed up from 1994-1998, other than you probably want the one with the least # of miles possible.

Thread title is disceiving...

My appologies (if you are serious) - what title would you have used?

Psh.... "Which tranny is the strongest" I got all sorts of stoked to see a tranny fight.
