JCviggen
What do you mean no one does this. You mean a tuned diesel or uses it as the base block for a gasoline engine?←people dont buy this engine if they want to make a lot of power, thats what I mean...if you want power you get the T-5...if you want a high MPG daily driver you get the D5please explain why you would want to use a 2.5 litre diesel block for a gasoline engine when there already is a 2.3 and 2.5 petrol (turbo) engine on the market?I'm just not seeing any benefit, just unnecessary complication m8 :)
StickThatClutch
I don't know anything about the D5 block really. But in general Diesel blocks are reinforced to deal with the high CR of diesel combustion. If you were going to be building something more insane than just chipping your car it might prove to be valuable?

I guess I'm assuming that the D5 block is Cast Iron...
JCviggen
well I havent heard about anyone cracking their blocks...loli think its our rods & pistons that are holding us back, the block, especially the HPT ones can handle HUGE amounts of power i'm sure.edit : and the last thing we need is a heavier engine ;)
Johann
here the D5's are a dime a dozen really...they have 163 hp stock, and I believe RICA has a chip that puts them a little over 190 hp (claimed - so probably something in the 18x range)They're darn nice engines compared to other diesel offerings on our market, but I cant say I see it as a great base for power. The engine was made for low fuel consumption and mid-range torque. Our gasoline turbo engines are much better if you want to go fastthough it must be said, a chipped D5 will definately be an equal to a 2.5 lpt←The XC90's are set near 190HP. S60D5 dyno between 195-198 HP consistent. It has been proven that the rod will come out near 235 HP ....

Swedish Mike
D5-block and T5 crankshaft, forged rods and pistons, mmm... THAT`S a strong engine! /Mike

THAT`S a strong engine! /Mike←I was thinking more like this...T5 block with D5 rods , if they would work.If those rods hold up to diesel boost/compression I think they could handle what we would throw at them. But then again Johann said they get thrown at 235hp. Imagine the torque it has!my Diesel 330d BMW came from factora with 184bhp its now chiptuned to 230hp and whopping 500 (!) Nm = 364 ft lbs.and then the engine on revs like 1500, if at all.and the same applies to the tuned D5. I guess the massive towque and the low revs is what kills the internals..BTW. : MR sweden offers remapping for the D5 to 210 hp i think. the market is sooooo big in europe. i think they have sold more tha a thousand d5 tuning units so far.Even on a tuned diesel like mine u easily get over 40 miles per gallon. Swedish Mike
I would´nt use the D5 rods, heavy as hell! Also a big piston-bolt/axle/pin./Mike
