boxpin
I bought a 98 V70xc for my daughter to take to college with her. She needed a AWD for snow. I picked one up that had a blown head gasket. I replaced the head and have been driving it for the past couple days. I noticed some water on the ground and tracked it down to the water pump...which I had replaced. So thinking it was the gasket I pulled it and put a new gasket in. I drove it but the next there was water there again. I pulled the belt, etc to get a good look and the worst thing revealed itself...a cracked block. The crack is about 6 inches and goes into the water pump housing. Bottom line, has to be replaced. I sourced a block today from a wrecker. Actually the same engine I pulled the head from. This is my first experience with a AWD and that trans-axle is a PITA for getting around under the car. Here is the problem. Its Sunday morning. She leaves for College on Wednesday morning. I have to get this engine swapped in three days. I am stuck on what to do to get the engine out. Do I pull the engine only or bring the trans with it? I cant even get to the bolts that are hidden behind the transfer case. Do I take that transfer case off? Whats the best way about doing this? Its an automatic. ARD - Lucky
Have you considered dropping the subframe with engine/trans as an assembly? I know it would be easier with a lift but I've done it on the ground in a pinch. It makes working in and around the engine quite a bit easier.... Matty Moo
If you take it out the top the angle gear has to come off. Otherwise, doable in three days.
boxpin
Well its out. Had to move the transfer case over to get the last bolt. Here is the crack
Matty Moo
50/50 either way, but you made short work of it for not pulling the trans out at the same time. In that case you would have had to pull the axles and the angle gear first. I pulled the axles and angle gear, and left all the accessories on since it was easier to do those out of the car. I had that same crane. It's a pretty solid unit for the price, but mine liked to "settle down" when it was at the very top.

burnout8488
Replace those turbo drain seals while it's out - the angle gear makes it near impossible to do with the engine in the car! Probably the reason the angle gear is covered in oil.
boxpin
Beautiful Color, Get it welded and call it a day! Cant weld it. It goes across the block into the water jacket. Its huge! Car is done, finished it tonight.

Probably the reason the angle gear is covered in oil. I actually replaced the drain seal while the engine was in. Not easy but possible. As a side note, I replaced every seal, even opened the pan and replaced the sump seal. Everythings new. Car runs great, smogged today.

boxpin
So, you want to spend a weekend in Big Sur? Why yes I do. Here is a better picture of the crack and why it was not repairable. I goes full on into the water jacket.

phunktified
nice work. it was my understanding its supposed to be much easier to pull the trans out along w/ the engine but you didnt seem to have much trouble leaving the trans alone ... comments/observations?
