'99 V70 Running On 3 Cylinders

'99 V70 (non-turbo) of my friend's...fairly well maintained w/ 147K miles on it.

A month or so ago, he got misfire codes and a constant 02 sensor code (SENSOR 1, BANK1).

Replaced the 02 Sensor w/ the correct one. Now, cylinder 1 and cylinder 2 don't fire at all...changed the coil packs around and it makes no difference. We can unplug both of the coil packs at cylinder 1 and cylinder 2 while the car is running and it makes no difference on how bad the car is idling...no change in sound. Did a scan and all we now get is error code for Sensor 1, Bank 2 and occasional "random" misfire codes. Gonna try and go help him with his car again this morning. I read in VADIS where the IDM (Ignition Discharge Module) supplies voltage to these coil packs. Since the two sets of wires that go to coil pack 1 and coil pack 2 are linked together, I'm wondering if the IDM is separate for 1&2 and 3,4&5? If so, where is the IDM?? Or, is there a separate Relay for these coil pack sets? Certainly that would be a simpler solution than trying to fault trace this issue.

Any ideas??

At friend's house....pulled 1 and 2 plug, grounding it and they both spark, so different issue than what we thought. Trying to figure out if it's fuel related, but other 3 cylinders are getting good spark and fuel. Raining now, so taking a short break, hoping someone will respond. Next step, measuring ohms at fuel injectors and going from there- possibly swapping them around.... BUT....could it be the ETM?? Would it cause this craziness?? It has never been replaced- maybe never been cleaned either. There isn't an IAC on this car is there? I do not see it, if it's present. I'm thinking it's part of the ETM....certainly idle is very low- 600rpm's and below and if you put it in gear, it stalls unless you floor it and top speed about 30-40mph if lucky. Spark pugs are all new and gapped properly. Other thoughts- Relay??

Eagerly awaiting any reply. We are stuck!!

Hello,

Are you 100% sure its cylinders 1 and 2 continuously missing, or is it just a random miss?

ETM won't cause a misfire, but it will cause a limp home condition (30-40mph top speed). No ETM codes set?

Have you checked the compression of the missing cylinders? Could be fuel, but its pretty unlikely that two injectors are bad together...

Wish I had more ideas for you :(

Thanks Joe- at this point, we are not sure...we were also getting a random misfire code two days ago, but seems to be stablized misfire on cylinder 1 right now....very strange, but what has stumped us is the most is that it didn't matter if we pulled the coil connector off of 1 or 2 or both while the car was running- there was absolutely no difference in how the car was running- no ETM code has been set. My friend did have a steady Bank1/Sensor1 code before and put a new front 02 sensor in- then he started getting a Sensor 1, Bank 2 code...checked resistance on the bad 02 sensor and nothing there whereas there is resistance on the new one. The rear 02 sensor has resistance too so I don't think it is bad. A lot could be wrong or it could be something simple. We would have to go get a compression tester from the auto parts store to check compression- something we haven't done yet, but with plug out (when we checked them), there seemed to be a lot of air forced up through the plug hole when we cranked the engine.

Could ECT sensor cause crazy things like this? Would it give us a code?

I assume the plugs are in good condition?

You said you tried switching the coils already. Only things left are compression and fuel. Could try switching the injectors I suppose, as long as the o-rings aren't damaged.

ECT failing will usually cause a fault, as well as an erratic gauge reading when warm. Can cause it to run rich when warm, as it usually will fail safe to a cold (enriched) condition. Very unlikely its enough to cause a miss though.

Sensor 1, bank 2 makes no sense, as only the 6 cylinder engines have 2 banks. Maybe a generic definition for another fault?

Sometimes a vacuum leak will cause 02 faults, something to consider as well.

Hope this helps,

Joe

Went and bought a compression tester-

cylinder 1: 60 psi

cylinder 2: 0 (zero)

cylinder 3: 180

cylinder 4: 180

cylinder 5: 180+

Now I know what the problem is and why switching coils between 1&2 made no difference.

Probably burnt between 1 and 2...so the head will have to come off to figure out what all needs to be done if my friend wants to save this car
