01 V70: Front Control Arm Bushings Shot In Less Then 20K Miles

Vehicle: 01 V70 T5M w/ Koni FSD, Eibach springs and no front swap bar

Parts: genuine Volvo parts stamped and sealed...

As the title states at 140K miles I pressed in new control arm bushings, both the vertical and horizontal ones on both sides. Now at 160K miles the pass side horizontal front bushing is shot! I'm not really surprised as I could see them degrading about 10K-15K miles ago. BUT now the pass. side is bad enough that I can feel it when moving the wheel at 3o'clock and 9o'clock movement.

The two issues here are..

1: What's the deal with these bushings? was there an update to the craptastic originals or is this just how it's going to be?

2: When I reinstalled the control arms, I found that the original bolts did no fit into the rear vertical bushings! I ended up having to set the vehicle down on the lift onto each bolt with a stand in order "press" the bolts through... thinking I wouldn't be in this area for a good 60K miles or whatever. Now it's going to be hacksaw time!

Advice? haha as you can tell, not happy with these stupid bushings

I haven't encountered prematurely failed Genuine bushings and I've put on tons... Literally. LCA bushing wear can be dependent on road conditions, driving habits etc. so this should be considered.

When you pry between the subframe and the bushing can you see the tearing or significant play?

The pass. side is totally shot, I can move it and feel the play in the wheel once in a while.

Conditions for the first 15K miles were almost all highway as I did a cross country trip with my wife this past winter. Now the last 5K have been mostly city driving...

I was thinking about just ordering the powerflex bushings as well as going with XC90 rear bushings.

After doing some research it looks like it's pretty common for these to go out every 30K or so. Very strange as ive been doing this for a long time now and never heard of the P2 Volvos having issues with the control arm bushings. What a royal pain!

So, I think I'm going to try and go with XC70 rear bushings and Powerflex fronts. see how long those last...

Much cheaper and it's real easy to press them in once you find the right sockets haha. It's about $100 for bushings and $300 for control arms. I can spend an extra hour pressing them in for $200 bucks.

Then comes the point that the stock ones suck! So since im going with Powerflex on the fronts and XC70 one on the back, I have to press them in....

my thoughts are get aftermarket new control arms. throw them on in one hour. done. instead of fussing to press them in for two hours. they typically fail in 30-50k. OEM or aftermarket. everyone had their choices. every p2 I ever had always needed control arm bushings that the previous owner neglected and it caused all sorts of front end issues thus UT reflected in the offering price by me, lol.

So spend $300 every 20k miles on control arms?

I would love to be able to swap out control arms as a whole. Although it doesn't seem cost effective with how long the stock or aftermarket ones last.

If I spend $80 on Powerflex and $60 on XC70 rears, then I should be able to get 60k or more out of them don't you think?

Idono, just frustrated with this design. I like my 98! I don't even know how many miles I have on the stock control arms! Haha

Thanks for the advice, as you can tell idono what to do really.

will, IMHO if...thats alot of if....if you pressed it in wrong angle then it would have too much stress on it thus premature wear.

that could be a cause, since it shouldnt wear out so fast.

aftermarket is $95 each before supporting members of VS get another 10% off so thats $190 - 10% = $183

if you spent the $300 in the first place you might not be in this position now. :( who knows...all i know it just sucks. on another note, i bought aftermarket ones for my xc90 and it was fine when i sold it at 169k and thats with 33k on them before i sold it.

That is what I bought the first time.

Now I'm doing Powerflex for the vertical bushings and XC for the horizontal bushings.

What do you say the XC bushings won't work? I've read a lot of places that they are an upgrade over the FWD versions since they have more material.

Update: received the bushings this past week. Bought XC rears (vertical) and powerflex fronts (horizontal).

I had to saw off the rear bushings to get them out of the subframe, which took a while. Anyway, tossed the control arms in the wood stove then sawed out the inner metal. Worked SO much faster then having to press them out. The XC bushings are a much better bushing then the original FWD version. Sadly Powerflex did not send me any grease so I have to wait for that to get here tomorrow. After all is said and done, I will have all new front suspension minus inner and outer tie rod ends as they are nice and tight.
