1998 V70r Owners

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum but I have driven many Volvo's in the past:

93 850GLT for 130K

88 745GLE for 333K (father's car)

I should also mention I sold Volvo's new and used all thru college. Loved every minute.

I am now in the market for a wagon, wife is due in May/June. I now have a Lexus IS300 and want something that is safer and comparable in performance. I have found a 1998 V70 R with 43K on it about 200 miles from home, I was gonna go check it out but wanted feedback from current owners before I do so. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

My plans for the car would first be some Moda R6's 17" for the summer and use the stock 16" for winter wheels. North East, gotta love it. I'm thinking about the dual exhaust as well...

Are you on your way there to buy it yet? :P THis is THE year to get in the P1 V70R. It's pre ME7, no ETS... it's still prey to all the same lil probems as the non R cars, but they are manageable, especially if you stick around this community. Congrats on your find... be sure and put your location in your profile info! Welcome to Volvospeed!

A question related to mileage. I have found a few 98 V70 R's around, the one with 43,00 miles costs about $3000 more than another V70R with 77K, should I seriously consider the one with higher mileage if I am going to plan on making improved reliability mods in the future?

Personally, I would go for the 77K one.. if they are both maintained identically. The 3k difference isn't going to transfer over into a nicer car. Like Greg said, check out V70R.com there are quite a few guys over there that can give you great help.... Greg's not that guy tho.. haha.. kidding Greg.

Also if its past the 70,000 mile checkup thats a load off of your wallet. Timing belt and pulleys are usually replaced around that time. ;)

Hate to be a "party pooper", but MisMy850 I thought you said you were looking for a safer car because the wife is expecting a new addition to the family.

R in the V70R = Racing speed performance high risk etc, etc.

If this is going to be the family car, PLEASE just get a plain V70 or the LPT, plenty of power to carry the family and stuff around. Remember the baby....

If this is going to be your car, then go for it

oh come on!

The wifey needs the extra juice to evade possible accidents! A V70R has no more power than some of the SUV's that are all the rage these days!

- don't cha think ? or am i way off base here?

I think you will find the R to be better in both performance and of crouse safety! all the is300's i have drivein have been nice but seem slow for how they feel.! you can be a good dad and good husben for buying the volvo, and aslo still have fun with the proformance of the R

good luck and welcome

Personally to buy an automatic with anything less than the power of the R is a frustration. Hunting between gears on uphills, having to floor it on freeway on-ramps etc. Both my wife and my 75 year old mom drives our R with my daughter who is 4 and my son who is 20 months. That's chipped, piped, lowered on 18's. They don't mind it, my mom mentions that it's a bit stiff feeling but since I lowered it she says that's the way she expects it to ride. I may go back to 17's for daily comfort. That's about the only change backwards that I would make.

It is just as safe as the regular models for kids.

Wow,

Thanks everyone for the responses. Regarding the safety issue, not worried about it, it is a Vovlo and I'll plan to drive the R like an "R"

The IS300 is fine, you guys are correct about the performance, the car looks faster than it is. I do have the 5-Speed which does help.
