After all that I went through with the pump i have a bigger issue now. last night the s80 started running hot while on the highway, I came up and shut the car off immediately.. I lost all the coolant and the car only cranks the starter but not the motor.... Im assuming I have a broken timing belt and the water pump went... I tried to fill the coolant up this morning, but it ran all out to the ground.. I did not have much time to look into the issue so I gathering all the help I can get as I will attempt to diagnose the issue and repair.

i am in need of a list of things to check as well as any good advice on replacing the belt, pump and tensioner.. Im good with American cars but not to familiar with my volvo.. Can someone with knowledge on this please chime in.. any help is appreciated as usual..

Thanks

If the belt did break you more than likely did engine damage... and if somehow it didnt damage the engine, it probably did when you cranked it over. The timing cover can be pulled back far enough to see the belt without removing anything, so start there and see what you're working with

Thanks Tino.. I was just reading your post about T-belts.. I was going to reply to ask you for help.. Im not sure what happened but it ran hot first and I shut it off. I didn’t here any thing but it never cranked the motor over.. only the starter.. What’s my worse case scenario?? I don’t think I want the answer but tell me like it is...

I’m not with the car now, but I will be cracking the timing cover open once Im home.., WELL WISH ME LUCK..

You could just as easily blown a hose (radiator hose) that caused the fluid to drain and cause the engine to run hot. If that's the case you could be looking at a failed head gasket.

I had little to no time this morning but looks like a all nighter in the garage when i get home.. I will look for the source of the coolant leak.. but i may have left something out of this post that was in my other post dealing with the fuel pump... when I started the car yesterday It stumbled and surged pretty bad, but smoothed out after 5 minutes.... I was paranoid to drive but I was about 15 mi. from home early morning..so I had no choice.. I believe that was my warning sign..but I failed to think that my timing belt is going.. I would have called for a tow or something.. but never the less Im at this point now..

thanks for all the input, hope you guys can help me through this job, i have a few master mechanic friends to also coach me along.

So.. my to do list starts with:

check timing belt

find coolant leak source

if the belt is broken check compression???

is it possible that the water pump gave causing the belt to break?? I know some American cars the water pump leaks when they go bad..

Im thinking hard on this one.. I love my Volvo, and I my be an owner for a long time so I think Ill do this job with no regrets hopefully... :/

thanks again for the help.

Okay so I peeked under the cover and the T-belt still seems to be intact.. I am going to now take the cover all the way off and check for belt damage.. as well as track down my leak..

Question: if the t-belt checks out ok, I could be looking at an coolant leak.. but I still can't get why the starter sound to be spinning but not the motor...???

Looks like for the most part I have a major coolant leak.. when I pour water in it leaks a little near the bottom passenger side, and a big leak between trans and motor pan but it's further up.. it all leaks right out fast. What should I look for in the rear? Does anyone have a coolant routing diagram? I hope it's something I can track down as it seems to be bad..

I was gonna suggest checking the radiator end tanks but you got around to it before I could post.

Do a compression test stat. This will give you an indication or whether or not you bent valves or blew a head gasket. When the end tank on my radiator blew on the coldest day of winter , it resulted in a bhg before I could safely pull over to the shoulder of the road. I can only imagine how much quicker the gasket would have blown in this warm fall weather.

If you have a bhg, then you'll probably find the other leak as you tear down the motor. I also would be leary of starting the car again until you've taken care of the radiator because its possible that you're contaminating your trans fluid with coolant

I did not try to start it again since but will keep that in mind..

So I will check timing marks

Compression test..

And check for hoses that may have failed..

How bad is a head gasket job?? I have access to a doner car but it's an s60 t5.. will that be the same radiator?

Thx again for assistance here ppl..
