Another Volvo

Grabbed another Volvo yesterday for my winter/backup car for not much at all. 01 V70 T5 with 230K or 140k miles. Mostly all Volvo serviced at least 70% of the time according to the Volvo service book. Passed E tested last week with flying colors and pulls hard for a long ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD wagen. Well cared for clean car and after a little TLC and an exterior detail it will look just peachy. Future mods will be springs - Tune - R bumper - tint and 18" Pegs. keep it simple on this one!

I will be needing front struts - and Im pretty dam sure I have that B4 servo issue with the tranny .Although I have no CEL for anything. It shifts weird in the lower gears at moderate speed sometimes, but downshifts and upshifts are perfect WOT. http://www.ipdusa.co...vo-cover-update

Im not well versed on the auto Volvo's, so any feedback with this would help me on the tranny issue. I'll also be doing a tranny tune-up and having a look at the tranny mount. Any suggestions on ATF fluid also? Ive checked FCP for Struts but if anyone knows of a better price than $129 a side, lmk. Thanks!

Before pics as I picked it up!

For the AW55 use Mobil 3309 or equivalent like Toyota Type-IV thats cheaper. I'm running Mobil 1 synthetic which is a little more pricier.

Like IPD said have make sure the software has been updated and if you are lucky the fluid and B4 will fix your issue, if not it could be the solenoids.

01-02 auto tranny, has the servo problem. dont need to have software updated but do a negative to the positive thing with the battery to clear everything then you can redo the throttle adaptives.

I have done the servo update, no trans flush and no reset on cars we bought from auction to do a quick craigslist flip. $2700 sell craigslist for $5500 real fast. with no problems

on cars that i have kept.

18 quarts of toyota fluid iv @ $5.50 qt

clear hose from home depot and do a drail and fill flush.

bought the servo update kit from ipd

if it is solenoids like what NEU is talking about. You will have lockup issues after the vehicle is warmed up. solenoid issues can be taken care of with getting upgraded one from here

$5.50 is alot better than what Volvo will want lol. I was just thinking seems the car has all the Volvo stamps for service up to 110K miles, the fluid might have been done already I would assume? I'll have to check that. Not sure what the dealer calls for with ATF service at what mileage on these Look at me, I think I am witty's.

Also, what do you mean by lockup exactly? And the negative to the positive( a reset)? I only paid $1600 for it, so I dont mind throwing a grand or so at it.

Just found this

Looks like the cost is around $250 for the kit.

since you only paid so little for it, change the fluid anyways becuase of the hard shift. Do yourself a favor and dont assume with this car. Especially 01/02 cars that started life with the "neutral stop" feature. this feature is what killed the trans early.

"Harsh shifting, Flares, CEL's, Transmission Limp Mode (3rd gear only)

Someone suggested the Solenoids on the forum (also my mechanic) cause my transmission shifted smooth and nice the first 30mins of driving and then just got worse and worse the longer I drove which said to him they would be clogged or damaged Solenoids. It was also the cheapest of my options (Solenoids were $247 Vs $1800 for a used transmission) we will see if it fixes the problem, if it doesn't it was worth the $247 cause I have brand new upgraded Rostra Solenoids to put into a used transmission instead of the OEM crappy ones lol

I was also getting this TCM-002F : Lock-Up Function Slipping or Not Engaging error in VIDA"

from another member.

Thats true. I'll change the fluid anyways and the Servo. Everything its doing now is in line with the IPD description of the servo B4 issue.

That's why you do the software update! To get rid of the neutral stop... <_<

Neu, you dont need to do it if it already has gotten the update to get rid of the neutral stop.

All the cars that are at 100k 99.9% of the time got that taken off already. If not the trans would be toasted by now.

most likely if the car is only experiencing flare ups between the 2-3 shift the servo will fix it. neutral stop is a big bang in first. its more exagerated when the mounts are bad.

We've installed the Rostra kit in a couple cars at the shop that were doing the usual garage shift, slamming, shift flares etc. I can say it's worked quite well. Doesn't shift like a brand new blue box transmission, but it's pretty damn close.

Here is what we have been doing:

Fluid flush

Rostra kit

Check for software update to TCM

After installing the solenoids we reset the transmission adaptives (not an adaptive test drive) drove the car for about 20 miles and everything is great.

Id be happy with just getting away with the Rosta kit at $250 plus fluid. I'll be even happier with what it seems like the more I read up on this if its just the Servo cover at $23.

Found some feedback on a few sites.

This is the procedure I used to reset my '00R and it made it shift alot better. Still have clunk the first time it shifts into 3rd but still better then it was.

Also Sonnax makes repair kits for the AW-55. Mine trans is a little different from yours but still has some of the same issues.

More than likely you need the Valve body rebuild/Updated. One of the plunger's is in upside down on the 01-02's. If your having a harsh engagement & or shift's a flush & solonoid isn't going to fix it. The valvebody's aren't to hard to R&I. . . . . . A buddy who's a Master Tech for Volvo & work's at Carlsen Volvo in Cali can rebuild it for you.

Actually I was just talking to an ex Volvo tech today that said they would replace the VB and still have the issue. He said he's done a few trannys with the B4 Servo upgrade with some fresh oil and its fixed the issues. I'll start there and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up on your pal, thats good to know anyways.
