04 S60R Tune Up Questions

Okay, im doing a major tune up on my s60r 6 speed. Car has 112k on the clock.

First off i want to change the trans fluid trasnfer case fluid and rear diff fluid. What is the best fluid to use for all those things? i can get redline for a good price or if thats no good dealer it is.

Also looking to replace the spark plugs what are the best performing plugs to go with (going to get a ARD tune after done with the tune up). trying to avoid the dealer as much as i can so i wont have to give them an arm and a leg.

and replacing the timing belt and water pump, when i opened the cover there was oil all over the place so im guessing one of the seals are leaking im just going to to go ahead and replace them. question is, is there anything i should know about on how to remove the valve cam gears ? anything special to replace the camshaft seals and crankshaft seal?

cam gears, have you done t/b w/p before?

well how about ME7 cars?

why do i ask? ME7 cars have vvt, the cam gears are tentioned. in the R there both intake and exhaust are tentioned. very different than the 98 and older cars. Just a fyi.

Crankshaft seal, 99.9% never needs replacing. if oil is in the tb area, you should check the dipstick for crankcase pressure.

What i would do is take off the spark plug cover and chek how much oil is under there. Sometimes the oil will travel to the cam gear area. before you start down the cam seal road, do a proper clean up first.

I used OEM plugs in my R. Order the haldex fluid from volvo. they come in a calk gun looking tube. IMHO the easiest way to fill the rear diff. drain fluid, open side fill tube that is on driver side up top. get clear tuve that can fit on the end of calk gun tube fluid and squeeze and pump the fluid in. I would just get OEM manual gear fluid if you like the oem feel of the shifter.

Plugs, go Genuine Volvo. They are expensive but the service life and reliability are great. I've always used OEM fluids when changing the Diffs, don't have experience with anything else.

Front engine seals leaking is going to be a tricky one. As Steve mentioned, make sure you don't have pooled oil leaking from on top of the cam cover down the timing cover. It's very common to see a broken PCV hose from the oil trap box to the cam cover. The hose was make from crappy plastic and they are often left broken for long periods of time causing an oil leak on top of the engine. If you do determine the cam seals are leaking you'll need to lock the camshafts from the rear with a special tool in order to remove the CVVT hubs. Search this site and you'll find a wealth of info on the subject.

I did have some oil on top of the engine, thats what i thought at first as well, but there was not enough oil there for it to leak down there. i cleaned it all up and going to drive the car around for a little open her up again and see where it might be leaking from. When i was buying the car the guy said it eats some oil, he said it was most likely turbo i thought that to, when i pulled the hose there was barley to no oil in the hoses.bunch of oil on side of the engine where tb is and some oil on top of engine.

When i pull the dip stick cant really notice any smoke coming out or any pressure building up. This guy spent a good amount of money replacing a bunch of stuff 20k miles ago i think the pcv was replaced. Ganna have to look thru the recipes.

Guess ima have to get OEM fluids and plugs.

Checked the fluids today, transmission looks like it was changed looks brand new, Angle gear looks clear as well, rear diff looks a little darker but still looks good. Should i still go ahead and replace the angle and rear diff?
