IrocD
Well maintained 01 S40 with just intake and MBC @12PSI in otherwise good health. Recent fuel filter My car will hesitate and misfire on different cylinders at hardish and full throttle with the dreaded flashing CEL. Sometimes it just flashes and has a pending code, then if not cleared after a few WOTs it will go steady and have a real code. I have tried swapping coils and wires, even using a brand new coil. I have replaced all the plugs too. Then I thought it was following the injector when I swapped those around, so I got another complete injector/rail/FPR setup from another boneyard. It seemed to help a little but its still there. Could it be the fuel pressure regulator? I don't have a gas odor or hard starts like I did when the FPR was bad when I first got the car. It would explain starving injectors right? Or could my pump be bad? So frustrating! I'm aware of the damage misfires can cause, so I really hate having to force them to test possible solutions. Otherwise the car runs great and at most throttle positions theres no issue. I don't get it! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Ol' Dirty Noodle
Make sure the plugs are gapped correctly .28 is what I run, also the car won't respond well to non OEM plugs unless they're NGK platinums or other Bosch platinums

They were just the cheapo NGK's but the plugs I took out were NGK platinums and it had the problem then. They didn't look that bad and they were only about 8k miles old... Should I clean those and put them back in?
Timbo Slice
You can get pregapped plugs. This is a common problem with these cars. I had the same issue on both of my cars. You need to look into replacing one or all of the following: plugs, wires, coilpacks. I got all of my stuff from iPd and it solved the problem instantly. when ordering plugs, get the Volvo OEM ones. IrocD
Someone on another forum suggested I pull and regap the plugs. Hopefully that works!
Timbo Slice
You could do that, but for the peace of mind I'd just replace them if they haven't been done in some time.

I took the guy's word for gold and I shouldn't have. Who knows how much money I would have wasted trying solutions that wouldn't have worked. The plugs I got were over-gapped by over .010 and so were the plugs I had taken out. Re gapped to spec, and its like a brand new car! I owe you one. There's a very happy Volvo owner in Rhode Island thanks to you. :)
