Slater
I was going to get the IPD skidplate but after seeing this it looks beefier and better for cooling than the IPD one. They are the same price.IPD is 1/8" aluminum which is pretty thin.I assumed the genuine Volvo one was cheesy paper thin sheet metal, so I'm curious if the one above is the Volvo one.Anyone here have it? Are the bars solid or hollow? Any idea on weight? Will it fit the 850? That site doesn't even have the 850 - oldest they have is the '00 V70 .- Slater

Volvo used bars vs. sheetmetal (IPD) to maintain cooling of the components the plate protects.
prasamin
I've never seen that one....how much does that retail for?...is it really worth having an open one like that...i mean, one of the benefits of a "splash" pan is that the electricals don't get wet.... Slater
That image is of the OEM Volvo skid plate. Volvo used bars vs. sheetmetal (IPD) to maintain cooling of the components the plate protects.Well, supposedly the IPD one has all of the big "holes" for cooling:Also, looking at the Volvo one, the bars are hollow because at the ends you can see how the bars are pressed down flat where they are welded to the cross bars, and then folded down 90 degrees at the very end. You can't do that with solid steel ;0)So which would would protect more?- Slater
prasamin
I would definitely say the IPD one...you have the cooling holes, but it is not wide open like the Volvo one...you get much better protection with more of a cover...the plastic one that is on our cars has no holes, though it is smaller, and it works fine....IPD seems more useful than the Volvo metal one... Also, if you look closely at the Volvo one and also the SPG9 steel one posted in the Review section of VS, both only go right to the oil pan drain and stop. The IPD one goes back another foot or so from the drain. That should greatly help the underflow of air under the body, and theoretically provide more protection than a shorter one.- Slater
Patrick.
the only way I would consider putting the OEM one on is if I could mount it and leave the plastic splash pan on as well. If that isn't possible, then definitely go IPD.
steve s
ipd is not bad...but it squeaks like crazy whenever there is the slightest flex in the frame. i'm thinking it has got to be that third bolt. there is metal piece that u place above the frame so the bolt has a place to screw to. the contact the metal piece makes with the metal frame seems like the place most of the noise comes from. wd40 and suspension grease only works for a little while... Their answer was "no, none at all".I have special lube for poly bushings that is waterproof. I'll be sure to use that. It's nasty stuff but lasts for years. Don't use WD40 as it eats rubber. WD40 is evil stuff for cars. The stuff I use is called Sylglide.- Slater
