2000 S70 Glt Won't Start - Crank Position Sensor

Just when I think I've got all the issues I was working on cleared up, the car won't start. Towed it to my favorite mechanic, and after some research he said something had been impacting the crank position sensor.

Some background:

2000 S70 GLT

146,000 miles

New timing belt @ 110,000, New ETM, New PCV breather system, rebuilt ABS module, IPD HDTCV, literally just did a total brake redo w/ rebuilt calipers.....

4 months ago had it in to the dealer for some issues, and ended up replacing the main oil seal. Big job, lots of $$ because of dropping the transmission. I remember when I picked the car up there was a small ticking noise with the engine running that hadn't been there before. About a month after that I got a cloned ECU from Lucky, because I was chasing down some CEL codes that wouldn't go away, and the dealer suggested that the ECU was bad. Codes were still there after putting in the cloned ECU, and after replacing the front O2 sensor, found out from the forums that there is a 20 amp fuse that will cause about 4 codes if it's blown. Sure enough mine was blown, replaced it and no more CEL issues. Car was running great for about a month before one day it just wouldn't start.

My mechanic thinks that when the dealer put the transmission back on something wasn't lined up properly, which eventually caused the crank position sensor to fail from impact. He tried to put a new one in and turn the engine, and the new one is getting marked up as well, and still no start. At this point, he has to tear the transmission apart to fully diagnose the problem. Are S70 transmissions known to fail this way?

Does this sound like the dealer screwed my car up? They obviously deny any responsibility. They offered to diagnose the problem at no charge but I live about 130 miles from the dealer. Is my transmission going bad? I've never had ANY issues with the transmission, had the fluid flushed at about 95,000 miles.

Any thoughts, anyone with a similar problem? Should I just junk the car? Arrrrrgh!!!

Thanks.

Absolutely sounds like they screwed your car up. If the sensor isn't removed when pulling/re-installing the transmission, the casing can smack it and injure it.

Remove the sensor yourself and see if it is physically damaged. The flexplate underneath should be straight as the motor turns, and not ever come in contact with the sensor. Sounds like they either smashed the sensor putting the trans in or bent the flexplate in a way that makes it not round anymore.

It's located right at the top of the transmission where it meets the engine. Held on by one 10mm bolt.

I have a spare sensor that I know is good if you need one, just let me know, I'll sell it for a small price if you need!

Thanks, this level of work is beyond my time and capability (dropping the transmission, that is). Car is in the shop now. The old sensor was definitely marred by something impacting it on the very end, the flat part, and when my mechanic tried to see if it would start with a new sensor, there was still something impacting it. From your description it sounds like they bent the flexplate. I'll find out pretty soon after my mechanic gets the thing torn apart. Hopefully there's enough evidence of negligence on the dealers part to make a case against them.

Thanks.
