95 N/a No Longer Starting.

Its still dead and I have not had time to work on it this week. Based on the turbo buzzing I am suspecting it is a drop in voltage at the ECU. The rest of the car(cranking, lights, etc) all function normal so if it were something like a dead cell in the battery I would see signs in other places. One thing I noticed is that the radio is not working, I checked and its the const 12v for the memory...the line is dead but the fuse is good. I traced it back to the fuse box and found that even though the fuse is good its not making contact at the prongs. I also noticed that there is a fare amount of dust in the fuse box from the previous owner. I was able to fix that fuse by cleaning the seat. I plan on pulling all the fuses out and doing the same.

The tach is still jumping and the check engine light is not coming on any more at all, that makes me nervous and I think I need to check the bulb before I try to make any more progress.

WE will learn something, I will find and fix it.

"Franklin" as my kids call it is back on the road.

Updating this thread. Found that one of the two OBDII port grounds (brown and black) did not have a ground. The brown in this case. When my scanner was plugged in the car would try to start. I jumped the brown wire to ground and it started. Back tracked it to the ECU. Found the wire in the ECU and the connection was fine. Found the ground for the ECU and it was fine. Put the ECU back in and locked it down then pushed hard on one corner which didnt move then moved to the back of the ECU and pushed down hard...it moved. Tested the car and it started. Pulled the ECU back out to get a good look at it and see that the plug was not flat. Put it back in and did the same thing again and the car now runs. Bottom line, ECU seating was the issue.

That was an awesome read. Sorry for your issues and glad you got it running, but that was fun.

+1

i'm saving this thread. i would just assume that any ECU seating issues also have the potential to cause many different problems as shown by this case...great info to have. awesome investigative work by OP!

UPDATE:

It was not the ECU. The car ran for another day or so then just started sputtering and died. Started, ran some time then sputtered and died. The tach jumps when this happens.

Found that if I applied ground to the brown wire in the OBD port the car would magically run perfect. Pull it out, sputter and die. Using the 202 page wiring diagram for the car it was tracked down to the ground bolt on the block above the starter...it was loose. Pushing the ECU in I think was coincidence as the car did run on and off again and that was probably just one of the on times.

So this story ends with a loose ground point on the block.

roger that. nice pics! i'll double check mine when i'm in there...glad you found the culprit. i'll have to form a habit of checking connections on a regular basis; i don't have this habit yet...
