(_8*(l)Homer
1998 V70R AWD 179k miles. I have noticed in the last month or so, the transmission has been slamming once in a while when it upshifts or goes in to that lock gear above 3rd (do you know what I mean, not really another gear, but something else). On my way home, about 1/2 mile from my house after it upshifted there was a clicking sound, not random or anything, but like steady, timed clicking. It did not increase or decrease with speed or engine load. When I gave it some gas, the clicking faded and stoped, but then came back when I let off the gas again. It's a tad low on fluid, like it was at the top of the "cold" after driving for 25 miles, but the fluid looks good, not dark or anything. What's going on with it? 5cyl
well first i would try to add some fluid. clicking sounds like maybe the torque converter locking function, what you described as another gear but not a gear, might not be engaging properly. Keaton85
Do a fluid change and make sure you have the correct level first. The torque converter lock-up is after 4th gear and above 50MPH with about 10%+ throttle input. The banging is usually caused by to much pressure being applied to the lock-up clutch when engaging. That's if the lock-up is the actual issue. In other words the solenoid that manages line pressure to the clutch could be the issue although fluid level, quality and a variety of other factors would be at play here. (_8*(l)Homer
When it's warmer out, I'll change the trans fluid. What would cause the ticking sound though? It was pretty loud, I could hear it in the cabin of the car and when I rolled down my window I could hear it quite loudly outside. I was probably moving under 25mph and had the foot off the gas. Edit - did not see your post 5cyl, the clicking happened when I was going less than 25mph, could it still be the torque converter lockup?
Keaton85
No, like I stated, 50MPH+ and around 30MPH on an N/A they have a lock-up for low speed. Not the case on yours. Also torque converters are VERY rare to fail on these. The clicking sounds like something else going on in my opinion...
5cyl
Yea i misunderstood. what is the frequency of the ticking? like 10 times a sec or what?
(_8*(l)Homer
Yeah, probably something like 4 - 10 per second. I remembered that I had noticed a whining from the transmission going at low speeds about a month or two ago.

(_8*(l)Homer
mine did that clicking noise too...2 months later, the transmission went out. Do you know what the failure was? I think I am going to bring it to the transmission shop up the road.
