1999 V70 Xc A/c Clutch Fix

Hi all, I've been reading here, Matthew's, and IPD for tips and tricks on my V70 as well as the 850 I drove before.

After we picked up the V70, we had a few fixes to do, one of them involving the A/C clutch's gap. The biggest problem I ran into (aside from things being rather cramped for working room) is that my clutch didn't match what I saw on the various forum topics on how to shim the gap...slightly different setup. My clutch looks like the pictures in thread, and the bread clips we had were too thick to close the gap under the rubber grommets while still allowing room for the clutch to engage and disengage.

We ended up using some scrap plastic cut into shape to fit properly.

Once our shims were sized properly (took a few times of shaving edges off), we spread on some Gorilla Glue epoxy and slid all three into place.

Fix was made on 29 December and as of 28 January the fix is holding. Hopefully this helps others out there with the same clutch design.

Nice work OP.

Great writeup, thanks!

Out of curiosity, what are the symptoms of a slipping ac clutch?

A/C stops cooling when it's hot outside.

Classic example. It's July and you hop in your car to go to work. Everything is nice and cool for about 10 minutes and then suddenly it stops blowing cold. Sweating you get out and work a hard 8 hours hoping it's just a fluke. Leaving work you hop back in your car and realize the A/C is blowing ice cold. Figuring it must just be a fluke you are smiling ear to ear. 10 minutes later you are cursing your car and sweating your ass off.

Given that we purchased this in September, I didn't have any issues with cooling off the cabin...what we first noticed was that the front windshield was not defogging, and that a filmy residue was collecting just above the defogger outputs (traced to a bad heater core, which we replaced yesterday). If the compressor doesn't engage, the A/C won't pull any moisture out of the air and will neither col the cabin nor defog the windshield.

After both fixes, no more issues there.
