vivalavolvo
Here is another goofy one. (only me) Went into the city for work today, about 18 miles mostly highway. Everything seemed OK, temp gauge never made it to 3 o-clock completely. I have noticed this a lot lately. Weather has been cold, and this morning was snowing. Fast forward to 1:30am (loooooong day) starts up, but idles rough. I sat for about 5 minutes to let things warm up then made my way down the parking garage. Temp was still cold when i made it to the highway, fired up Torque on my phone and it was reading the coolant temp at about 100f. After several miles on the highway the temp gauge never lifted off, torque still read 100ish. About half way home the CEL popped on and the temp gauge jumped to that not quite 3 o clock position its been hanging out the last couple weeks, torque still reads 100ish. I stop at the Wawa down the road from my house and as i got out i noticed the fan was going! I pulled the trigger wires from the relay and ran in and got dinner (no more then 10 min), get back out, reconnect the relay and the fans were off. Start it up, fans come right on and the temp gauge is back to cold. Popped it in Reverse and it nearly stalled but caught it self. It was about a block back to my house and the throttle felt very frisky, almost as if the IAC was hanging open. Pull in my drive way, listen for the fan, it was still running but this time it shut off with the car. Wut happened? 95 T5 ARD Thanks!

Oreo931
ECT sensor (coolant temp sensor)
RobT5M
ECT sensor (coolant temp sensor) Josh imma side with Oreo here and go with that. Get the code checked too. Sounds like either the ECT or maybe your Tstat?
Rsterns
I'm thinking thermostat, if it was stuck open, it would take much longer for the engine to get to 3 o'clock.
optimus prime
I had a similar problem when my ect went all screwy on me. So yeah what rob and oreo said. Cheap part easy and quick to replace. Sometimes you wont pull a code from it as I have found out.
BlackBrick
very common for thermostats in these cars to get stuck open (better than stuck closed!), that's what it sounds like to me. as regards to your fan, i believe if the A/C is on (which would be if you have your windshield defroster on), the fan automatically comes on. vivalavolvo
I was thinking ECT and t-stat on the drive home, but the fan running with the car off? I know they run with the AC but mine is broken and i didn't have it on defrost, but i did have it set to auto. As far as i know tho if the pressure switches wont allow the compressor to come on the rest of the AC things won't happen. I will pull the code today, torque won't pull 4.4 codes for some reason, and Matty Moo, it was a used ECU.

vivalavolvo
Got it hooked up to a real scanner. Ect code. Peaked at the real time data and it was showing 14f and ambient was 45, never went below freezing last night.
optimus prime
i have had two go bad on me in one years time. At this point i consider myself lucky that the last one has lasted 7 months
vivalavolvo
That's sucks. Mine might have been slowly going bad for the last year. So I need my car on the road. I can have a Standard brand sensor in an hour or wait a few days for a Volvo branded one. Any thoughts on a non genuine part?
jnderr
Any reason you can't drive your car while waiting for a part? Also replace the T-stat while you are at it. Its $9.
