jschaefer7406
Hello all, Considering an XC90 for the Wife and am curious about the reliability of the 3.2 and/or V8. Leaning toward finding an '06 and staying with the 2.5T, but have seen some good deals on the 3.2 models as well. Is the 3.2 a good bet for reliability and ease of maintenance, or should I avoid them? As for the V8, I know the '05 models had balance shaft bearing issues, but are the '06- models a safe bet? Also not sure on the TF80 transmission. Any issues? Left the dealership in early '08, so I didn't have much time to see the longevity of the newer powertrain... Any info is appreciated, thanks in advance, Joe
Ghost Shadow
here's something i did when the xc90 info was still fresh in my old brain http://xcforums.com/topic/25-so-you-want-to-buylookingthinking-a-xc90-read-this-guide/ i am looking for a 03-05 2.5t awd 3rd row, then planning on getting k24 turbo, downpipe and ard ecu.tune why? reliable powerplant reliable transmission lacking power from the turbo turbo swap and ecu tune and downpipe will give it 1000x more fun. its basically the same shit in the vr and sr's these xc90's are going for cheap right now...seen 04 with 115k ask for $6500 and been on craigslist for months. i didnt more it yet since i want to sell my 98 s70 first
831t5r
I just got a 05 xc90 t6 for 5 grand thru my work from a coworker who bought it off a customer for cheap. Reliability and cost go with a fwd 2.5t. If you dont mind the lack of power the 3.2 isnt bad no major issues with them just no power
Dick Dastardly
Just sold my '04 (2.5 awd, full optioned 121k ) for $7600. All maintenance was 100% and tires were good.. Over all it was a 8.5/
troyhyde
I'm kind of looking for an XC90 myself (for the wife and kid coming soon). My buddies at the local Volvo independent shop told me I wouldn't be welcome around there anymore if I bought a T6. My gut tells me to go the 2.5T route since I already know the general lay of things, maintenance, ability to up-rate performance a little, etc... I chatted with a guy the other day with the V8 and he said it is an amazing powerplant. The reviews seem to agree. For towing anything, the V8 is likely the best option. For fun, economy, and maintenance the T5.

jschaefer7406
Thanks for the info guys. Very nice write-up Steve . Wife found a few 3.2's she likes, but I'd still prefer to stay with the tried-and-true 2.5. Have heard the 3.2 is a decent engine, but have also read about cam seal leakage, etc... Would have liked to find one with RSE, but that's proving to be nearly impossible as well . Really wish I could find one in Crystal Green with gray leather and RSE, that'd be the perfect package . Found an '06 within 200 miles, but it's silver on gray (still a very nice cccombo). Trying to get the dealer to provide a CARFAX...
