Lots Of Oil On Rear Of Block, Under Axle, Not Turbo Return Line, Rms Seems Ok...heads Together Now And 1,2,3, Think!

I'll probably change them any way, its relatively easy and the parts are inexpensive.

I'm of the mind that putting $500 or so a year on maintenance into this car is a good deal. I cant see ponying up cash and paying a note for a new car.

I did not drive the car much so I can't tell if I fixed the issue. I'll know more after my 60 mile round trip highway commute tomorrow.

Thanks again, I'll report back with results, hoping to help others in the future.

Oil still leaking and spraying over back of car...FML.

Next.... front cam seals look like pain in balls, rears not so bad. Its quite a bit of oil too. But it has been going on for months and gotten progressively worse.

WTF else is there? I know my valve seals are going, I get some smoke after idle, and today noticed for the first time smoke under load. PCV has not been done in a while either...the list is getting longer...and the bill higher...

Pull your dipstick with the engine hot and running, see how much smoke is billowing out of it. If there's a lot, your PCV is clogged. There is zero point in stopping the oil leak with a clogged PCV; the oil leak will just move elsewhere. Fix your PCV if it's clogged and then move on to the oil leak.

You say that there's a lot of oil; is there oil on either front or rear cam seals? Take off the timing belt cover, is there oil collecting at the bottom of the cover? Clean off any oil on the rear seals, or just remove the cap and sensors and check to see if there's oil leaking from them.

So right about the PCV check and replacement first. I'll check that this PM.

We pulled TB cover off, it didn't look too bad. Just did oil cooler lines a few months ago, maybe oil tstat Oring, we didn't replace it.(rectangle?), I'm gonna find this bitch leak if it kills me, this engine has been good to me and there is no quitting now!!

Its enough oil to drip off 'back' of engine and rear sub-frame cross member, blow under and burn on exhaust and then fly up the rear of the car and get tail gate and rear window fouled with oil spray. It doesnt seem to be localized to one side or the other, like an RMS would be.

Thats why I suspected return line Oring or drain plug washer.

I'll keep pounding on it.

poundin it!!!

Yup, checked for RMS weep, didnt see much.

I replaced it a while back, an d when it was leaking, the oil was almost all dripping down the drivers side. This leaking is more widespread.

PLus I'm smoking under load, looks like its time to get a remaned head from Clearwater... :(

^Yes. Check PCV. Blowing smoke and leaks from bad places (cam seals, RMS, etc) are the two main symptoms of a clogged PVC. I had both those issues when my PCV was clogged. Also, I had a very bad and seemingly widespread leak in my GLT that was caused by the bottom connection of the PCV catch can being seated incorrectly on the block. See this pic borrowed from MVS, the connection circled in yellow was leaking very badly. A quick re-seat of that fixed the problem.

Smoke under load is unusual for these cars. Puff of smoke on first startup or after prolonged idle >> valve stem seals (common). Smoke under load >> maybe leaky turbo oil seals (rare) or blowby (rare) or ??

Offhand I wouldn't be thinking the head needs pulling, I'd check out several things. Unless the head has already been off, and maybe it wasn't put back on right? Anyway, do a compression test just because. Is it white smoke or blue smoke? Fix the oil leak so you can tell if it is burning oil.

PCV is OK.

Head is last resort, its never been removed or replaced.

Smoke is blue, I get it after long idle and start up.

Wouldn't oil from turbo be constant? and un burned?

Would a normal garage do compression and leak down? How or who would do this?

This makes more sense. Valve stem seals. Before you said smoking under load. Oil from turbo gets everywhere and burns.

Any garage can do compression, all you need is a gauge, thge ability to pull spark plugs and follow directions, and a warm car. You could do it yourself, about a 4 out of 10 on the difficulty scale go for it!

Leak down also any garage (doesn't need to be a Volvo specialist) but it is slightly more complicated than just compression, best done with a leak down tester.

I THIRD the cam seals. I had a similar leak over the back of the block, it was the cam seal behind the cam sensor. It's impossible to see the source of this leak without taking off the cam sensor and having a look. And it was spilling out ridiculous amounts of oil.

Have you checked that yet.? Hopefully that's it...takes 5 minutes to check, and 15 minutes to replace, and about $12 in parts.

if it is the cam seal, MAKE SURE TO BUY VOLVO OEM CAM SEAL!

Ok so I pulled off the cam position sensor. It was dry behind it.

The flame trap was on solid

I'm thinking now after 150k it's the RMS

I will crawl under the car tomorrow and do some serious inspection of the weep hole area

Wish I had a lift.

I fear that I'm doing a rebuilt head and an RMS.

I'll do a compression test, not too concerned about leak down at this point.

This car has been good to me I don't beat on it. I did all the suspension and brakes and I got some nice mods and a tune in it. It would be way more a pain and cost to get another used car. I'll bite the bullet, do the work, and get another 200k out of it!!!
