S70 Driver Side Axel. "is It In Yet"

Recommended Posts

Hey I have a 1998 s70 N/A that failed inspection for driver side axel. I replaced it and my stepdaughter got about 4 miles out of it and it popped out. So I recovered from all that, even replacing the hub as well because of the play that was quite obvious there. I had it out, reinspected the teeth on all parts involved, seal OK , and this time kept the shaft level and tapped it in with a rubber mallet until I could see the bearing was seated completely and kept tapping until it seemed travel stopped this time !.

Now the question is, I want to ensure the link is properly engaged with the snap ring. Does anybody know exactly what kind of gap will be present when the ring is engaged? You know, between the assembly and the trans. Just awaiting a " click noise" is no good for me. I measured 2.5 mm, which I saw another post somewhere, (maybe MV site) as " two and a half to three mm." My measurement on completion was 2.5 mm

Now, I took a brief test ride and got back under the car to check. Looks like I had .5 of travel because now the gap is 3 mm. I took the last measurement with a typical 12" wooden ruler by getting under the car, noticing it fit snugly now between the tranny case and knuckle cup. ( the ruler reminds me of those cheap paint stirrers you get when you buy a gallon of paint ) The width of the ruler is 3mm

I believe that may be normal "travel", or that I may have gone slightly past the receiver for the engagement clip, and now it is ok. I will be doing another test run today, hopefully this is it for this thing moving. If I have to bang it in further, I can do it with the axel level, the nut off, and a wooden dowell easily, however if it pops out, then i have this big mess again. Any comments?

:blush:

You are over thinking this. Sounds as if the axle is seated properly. If it didn't come out on the test drive I venture to say you'll be just fine.

Maybe. Yesterday was a 5 minute ride around the block to get the ( auto trans) levels from fluid loss back into the gears. And it did move 1 mm.

It took my daughter 15 minutes of driving Tuesday for it to pop out last time when she hit highway.

I'll take the car today and put a little more speed and cornering stress nearby and then recheck for more axel travel before I wind up needing another tow truck on the highway. I was really hoping to find out if 3mm sounds like the right spacing for proper clip positioning since I can't see inside the trans. Guess I'll find out the hard way.

* aww c'mon you don't hate speedbumps !

If you can't pull it out by hand by grabbing the piece closest to the transmission and pulling, then it's in. If the clip isn't engaged, then it'll slide out with only a few pounds of force.
