Hard Shifting After M56 Swap

Recommended Posts

Put on about 150 miles with the M56lk in the S60. I have delrin bushings for the shifting assembly and the shifter. I'm using 5w30 (currently) in the trans. The shifting takes some work - I have to give a medium-amount of effort into shift into each gear (couldn't do it with 1 finger). It doesn't just "fall in" to each gear like I'd expect.

When I installed the Quaife I installed new bearings for the axle-side, but this shouldn't have any affect. Any ideas?

I'm doing very frequent MT fluid changes until I feel the Quaife is good-to-go.

I did a 5w30 change at 50 miles. I did another 5w30 change at 100 total miles. I'm changing to RedLine MT-90 today, at 150 total miles.

Do you think it's really the fluid? I did a saw a bunch of threads saying the OE MT fluid is equivalent to 5w30.

TBH I scoffed at the whole 5w30 thing  , but like I said, with the frequency of the fluid change until I felt the Quaife was good-to-go I didn't want to shell $$ for the RedLine. It woudln't take much to convince me otherwise...

The Volvo fluid is 75w gear oil. I don't know enough about oil to know just how different that is, but it's definitely not 5w30 motor oil.

Also did you route the shift cables correctly? Make sure they aren't binding up or going around a sharp corner, and also try lubing the cables themselves. Drip oil down the housing with the boot pulled back.

You are correct, the OEM bottle of Volvo gearbox fluid says 75W gearbox fluid

Hopefully you didn't overheat the bearings with that excessively thin oil. You changed both diff bearings, correct?

Sounds more like a shift linkage issue, but that oil needs to come out ASAP

It doesn't look like there was ever a consensus that 5w30 was an acceptable fluid, other than hearsay. After spending money for the Quaife I'm not sure why you wouldn't spend the money for the proper fluid!

5w30 was used in earlier Honda gearboxes

I'm sure it could be used in gearboxes as long as the gear box synchros and oiling mechanisms are designed to run a thin oil. most just use splash oiling and dont like oil that thin.

I doubt those early honda gearboxes saw much torque,

5w30 gear oil is damn near the same viscosity as 75w gear oil. The additives are certainly different though. There are plenty of people on this forum using 5w30 in there trans, not a big deal. Both are right around 10cst at 100*c and 55cst at 40*c. If anything I would say on average 5w30 is probably a little bit heavier than 75w80 gear oil.

Now, I've been using 5w30 in my trans for ~50K miles and it hasnt exploded yet. It does make a weird rattling noise at idle sometimes, but if you read here: it seems that is pretty common with the SM flywheel so it's hard to say if I should blame the oil for it. In your case I would probably get ahold of quaife and use whatever they reccomend. For me I have a good spare trans and they are fairly cheap, so I'm willing to take the "Risk" using 5w30 in it. If it does eventually die I will use genuine volvo fluid next time. If I had a $1000+ diff in there I wouldn't be willing to risk it.

Anyhow, I don't think I could shift my car with 1 finger either although I havent tried. Are you sure yours is harder to shift than normal? Have you driven another car with the same trans before? If it is hard, the oil isn't the problem. I'd double check the bushings on the shift linkage where it connects to the trans and make sure the linkage isnt kinked or pinched somewhere.
