pjcrump
Have a 2000 S80 with 147K on it - Wife's car. Problem is that she can be driving the car and then the Spedo and the Tach will fall flat, idiot lights come on but the car continues to run fine. If she cuts off the car and restarts then sometimes the gauges will come right back other times it will take a few min or seconds.. Obviously this is electrical but I am not sure where to start. This does not happen every time she drives the car but it recently started popping up. Also, a few minutes after it happend last i went to the Auto parts store and ran a scan tool on the car and it showed no codes. Thx in adv! jschaefer7406
Hello, Does anything else quit (like door locks, windows, etc)? Probably codes stored, but will need a Volvo specific scan tool (VADIS or VIDA) to pull them. Most generic scanners will only pull drive train codes, nothing inside the car... My guess is a network communication problem. I've seen a problem with another module in the network take out the instrument cluster, such as coffee spilled into the SRS module beneath the center console. Codes usually won't help track down something like that anyway, but its a place to start. You can at least check the car for codes by holding the reset button for the trip computer (on the turn signal stalk) while pressing the rear fog light switch twice. This will tell you which modules have a code set. Won't say what they are, but its a quick (and free ) way to see which modules have faults stored . Hope this helps, Joe

Sweet Jesus that's good info, wish I knew that when my gf's brother had his S80. OP: If you find a module is fried, don't freak out. Xemodex may be able to rebuild whatever is wrong. http://xemodex.com/technologyimproved/volvo
pjcrump
Update: I got the ABS controller rebuilt by Modulemaster. Put it back in the car and it ran good for 1 day. Wife was driving today on the freeway and the tach and dash went dead but car kept running. I called indie mechanic (who has VADIS) and am thinking about taking it to him.. Could this be a Crankcase sensor?
Ihatespeedbumps
As mentioned above you're going to need to VIDA tool to diagnose this yourself. My bet would be the cluster is the culprit, but something on the low speed network could be kicking it off as well.
DVolvoguy850T5
I miss my 71 142e. Easy to diagnose and repair. Xmodex is your best bet. Take it to your inde.
