rbodor3
Rattle from the driver's side, and believe it's the Quaife. Just got the new engine, manual trans, Quaife past the 1k mile break-in. Did a couple red-light launches. Now I haev a rattle most noticeable 20mph+. Vehicle speed = higher frequency rattle. Crusing in neutral w/ vehicle speed makes no difference in the rattle. Wheels lifted in 2nd gear = no rattle. Appears that RH-down turns clear the rattle. Diffs seems to grip but not as well as before - could be in my head. Lifted wheels, both spin same direction. BUT I can manually spin one wheel opposite the other (like an open diff) while in neutral. Read thru How realistic is this, and how can I diagnose? blkaplan
Sounds like an engine mount to me, I would focus on that first. Testing a torsen in the air doesn't work too well, you need resistance on both wheels for it work.
rbodor3
in neutral one wheel on the ground one wheel up, free wheel spins. in gear doesn't spin, which would make me believe that I at least haven't catastrophically failed the diff. Engine mount I would think I'd have excessive vibration. Or the rattle would be different when I was in neutral rather than in gear but it's the same regardless - seems the only relationship is with vehicle speed. Volvo5.0
Now I haev a rattle most noticeable 20mph+. Vehicle speed = higher frequency rattle. Symptom sounds like a wheel bearing...
rbodor3
rattle, not a roar or whine that you'd expect with a wheel bearing. more like something loose but completely certain that no paneling/mounts/etc. are just loose or vibrating. LloydDobler
Another quick check, make absolutely sure the halfshaft is seated in the diff, I can't remember where but someone on a Volvo forum just had that exact problem, they didn't get the snap ring snapped in fully and the halfshaft was rattling as it worked its way back out of the tranny. Hellas850 T-5
how many kilometres have you driven with the clutch?and which clutch do you have on?(single mass I hope)
rbodor3
I'm using a dual mass and have only driven 1k miles, but I reused the clutch (didn't get a new one). I'm teaching another to drive manual on this car and the last thing I wanted was to burn through a brand new clutch. Existing clutch had 80k miles on it at time of removal. TIZIO AKA 1 HND MEC
I found this and I hope help you or others, is from a very reliable source: ....... replaces the standard 'open' unit in a Volvo M56 5 speed manual gearbox. (different part not Quaife)--> It will maintain drive even if one driven wheel is not in contact with the ground, unlike the Quaife type diff. which looses drive if either driven wheel is not in contact with the ground.
