There's some good discussion about why you should or shouldn't use urethane in some applications.

Urethane is good to use in some places - firmer, can make the car more sure-footed in feel and give more positive feedback through the steering wheel.

In others it isnt ideal, the side effects can be an increase in NVH, more negative feedback through the steering wheel, reduction in ride quality and can give the can a more 'darty' or uneasy feel on the road.

It just doesn't return to its normal shape as easily as rubber does when stretched or deformed over a long period.

The P80 platform is a comparatively firm car against others designed and built at around the same time. Many of them run large (for the time) 17" wheels with relatively low profile standard tyre sizes; 205/45 & 215/45, etc and in our market at least (Australia, which shares the same drivetrain and suspension specs as euro cars), the R models were quite firmly sprung.

In Australia, there were quite a few complaints about 850T5R and 850R models when new from a ride point of view (we have horrible roads) that Volvo actually swapped over customers from Titans or Volans with 205/45/17 tyres Columbas with 205/50/16 tyres at the request of the customer if they complained. Madness! Really, just an oversight as a result of not doing a country-specific spring and damper tune for our market.

If we talk about urethane bushes in LCAs, the things above will definitely contribute to an increase in NVH, negative feedback through the steering wheel and short bush life.

That said, the more performance-focused folks may not see this as an issue of concern though and, if a decent urethane bush is used, they may have an acceptable service life.

It's all food for thought.

Our 1998 V70T5 recently got new arms. We used a normal rubber bush with steel shell (pre-fitted to our new arms)

Our car has 215/40/17 tyres fitted on Titans, and will H&R springs and Ohlins struts up front, so a normal bush will be fine.

Apologies for the tangent. As you were, gentlemen.

I started by purchasing the small press from Harbor Freight. After assembling it I realized I would never get the right angle on it to push them out. So it was returned and I bought this bearing puller set.

With a combination of sockets and this puller I got them out. It was not easy at all and I bent some of the puller parts. Thats my experience trying to do it in my driveway. Honestly, I would pay for it if I did it again.

aaand same thing will happen again...use 94 + steel arms...didn't i tell you or someone that already on this forum.

The arm did not fail. Although the picture looks bad the actual fail point was the internal pin to bushing clearance. The rear pins just fall out as opposed to having to be pressed in when new.

never understood why ppl ran the aluminum arms AFTER volvo *clearly changed design/material for a reason... but what does volvo know, right??

uhmmm ....cause it is fun?

aaand the weight reduction with those light aluminium arms is what helps to propel the lighter beast...:)

aaaand those easy removable lower ball joints is a huuuge time saver as well. ;)

i hope this helps understand for the ones that didn't.

hey Dougy i hear you bro... i dont run my floor mats cause it makes my car lighter. and seeing as aluminum control arms failing are worth the weight savings i guess you, me and Volvo are clearly the naive ones here.

yeah kit we are , huhmm...never thought about floor mats...i have volvo carpet ones and volvo rubber ones...i will go remove them ASAP... that should lighten this ship up a bit from 3735 to 3729. thanks bro.
